Eskild Balschmidt Ebbesen (born May 27, 1972 in Silkeborg ) is a Danish rower . The three-time Olympic champion and six-time world champion is one of the most successful athletes in his country. He achieved his success almost exclusively in the boat class of lightweight four-man boats . The team he leads is also known as the “gold fours ” ( Guldfireren ).

biography

In 1993 Ebbesen won his first world championship medal in Roudnice, Czech Republic , when he finished second with eighth place . He then switched to the newly introduced boat class of the four lightweights , in which the Danes immediately put themselves at the top of the world. After winning the World Cup gold in Indianapolis in 1994 and World Cup silver in Tampere in 1995, winning the Olympic gold medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta was the first highlight.

In the following years, the gold four was superior to the competition. Ebbesen won World Cup gold three times in a row; 1997 on the Lac d'Aiguebelette (France), 1998 on the Fühlinger See near Cologne and 1999 in St. Catharines (Canada). At the 2000 Summer Olympics , however, the gold four could not live up to his role as favorite and reached third place. Again three medals followed at world championships: 2001 silver on the Rotsee near Lucerne , 2002 gold in Seville and 2003 again gold in Milan .

During the opening ceremony of the 2004 Summer Olympics , Ebbesen was the flag bearer of the Danish delegation. In Athens he won his second Olympic gold medal with the gold four. After that, however, the series of successes broke off, and it was not until 2008 that Ebbesen's gold four-man made it back to the top of the world with two victories at the Rowing World Cup. He won his third gold medal at the Summer Olympics in Beijing . Even after this Olympic victory, Ebbesen withdrew from the international rowing event, in 2011 he was back and at the Olympic Games in 2012 he won his fifth Olympic medal.

In 1998 and 2004 Ebbesen was voted Denmark's Sportsman of the Year . He works professionally as a health advisor. At a height of 184 cm, his competition weight is around 70 kg. He rows for the clubs Silkeborg RK and Danske Studenters RK.
