Jost Schömann-Finck (born October 8, 1982 in Zell (Mosel) ) is a former German rower who won three world championship titles.
Career
He learned to row in his home club, the Rudergesellschaft Zeltingen , for which he started from 1997 to 1999 at the German youth championships in lightweight rowing . The crowning achievement was the 1999 German youth championship in the lightweight double sculls in a racing team with athletes from Mainz, Speyer and Hanau.
After completing his boatbuilding apprenticeship, Schömann-Finck settled in Treis-Karden and from then on he started for the rowing company Treis-Karden , where he was trained by Michael Hippert. Since spring 2006 he has been rowing together with his older brother Matthias in the Riemenzweier . The two were initially trained in Mainz by Diethelm Maxrath. He celebrated international successes at the rowing world championships in 2006 on Dorney Lake and in 2007 in Oberschleissheim , when he was runner-up in the lightweight eighth championship.
In 2008 Schömann-Finck got into the German lightweight four without a helmsman who was able to qualify for the Olympic Games in Beijing at the qualifying regatta in Poznan, Poland. Three rowers fell ill in Beijing, including Schömann-Finck, so that the four-man had to be canceled after a sovereign victory in the preliminary run.
At the beginning of the 2009 season, both Schömann-Finck brothers joined the training group at the Saarbrücken federal base after Diethelm Maxrath left Mainz. At the 2009 World Championships in Poznań, Poland, Schömann-Finck won the world title in the lightweight foursome together with his brother Matthias and the twins Jochen and Martin Kühner . The team had already finished second in the overall World Cup in the lightweight foursome in the 2009 season and won a silver medal at the European Championships in Brest, Belarus , three weeks after the world championship title . In autumn 2009 Schömann-Finck announced his move to RV Saarbrücken, so that the entire world champion four started for this club.
In 2010, Jost Schömann-Finck was together with Jochen and Martin Kühner and Tobias Franzmann German champion in the lightweight four without a helmsman. Also in 2010, Schömann-Finck, together with the Kühner brothers and Bastian Seibt from Hamburg, won European championships in Montemor-o-Velho, Portugal . The 2010 season ended Schömann-Finck at the World Championships with a fourth place in the Lgw.-foursome with only 56 hundredths of a second behind world champion Great Britain; This bitter defeat was made up for by the four-man team Jost Schömann-Finck, Bastian Seibt, Jochen and Martin Kühner on the following day when they won gold in the lightweight eight with Jan Lüke , Robby Gerhardt , Lars Wichert , Daniel Wisgott and helmsman Albert Kowert .
In the pre-Olympic season, the easy foursome made up of the Schömann-Finck and Kühner brothers did not get going at the World Rowing Championships in Slovenia and missed the final. In the following season, Jost and Mathias Schömann-Finck were finally no longer part of the Olympic lightweight foursome, which finished 9th in London.
In the course of a five-month stay in New Zealand, Schönmann-Finck became New Zealand champion in the lightweight single at the beginning of 2013. He started at the first Rowing World Cup in Sydney in 2013, also in this boat class, both in the lightweights and in the open weight class and achieved a podium finish in each case. After returning to Germany, he rowed again in the easy foursome, which, however, clearly missed the finals at both the European and World Championships . In 2014 Jost Schömann-Finck switched to the scull area and competed for the last time at world championships . He won a silver medal with the German lightweight quadruple scull.
After not having started internationally in 2015, he was able to recommend himself for the squad of the easy four-man squad for the 2016 Olympic season in winter 2015/16, which, however, had not yet qualified for the Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. At the beginning of 2016, Jost Schömann-Finck left the project after doubts about the chances of success of the four-man and ended his active career as a rower.
