Franco Sancassani

Franco Sancassani (* 12. April 1974 in Lecco ) is a former Italian lightweight - rowers , who won from 1995 to 2011 twelve World Championship medals, including nine gold medals.

Career

Sancassani began rowing in 1985. He won his first world championship medal at the 1995 World Rowing Championships when he finished third with the Italian lightweight quadruple. In the following year, the Italian four-man won the gold medal at the 1996 World Rowing Championships , the first title of four titles in a row. It was not until the 2000 World Rowing Championships that the Italian lightweight double- four lost to the Japanese. Six weeks after the world championships in the non-Olympic boat classes, Sancassani took part in the lightweight foursome without a helmsman at the Olympic Games in Sydney , where he finished fourth.

In the next few years Sancassani continued to compete in oar boats . At the 2001 World Rowing Championships he finished fourth in the uncontrolled four-man, and the following year he won silver with Carlo Gaddi in the two-man without a helmsman . at the 2003 World Rowing Championships , Gaddi and Sancassani took sixth place. In 2004, Sancassani won gold with a quadruple, and in 2006 with an eight. In 2007 Sancassani returned permanently to the sculling boats , first with moderate success in singles, in 2008 again with a world title in quadruples. This was followed by two more world championships in 2009 and 2011, as well as the European championship title in 2010, each in a double quad, with fourth place at the 2010 rowing world championships in between .

With a height of 1.76 meters, Sancassani had a typical competition weight of around 71 kilograms for lightweights .
