Lorenzo Bertini (* 1. June 1976 in Pontedera ) is a former Italian lightweight - rowers , who won from 1995 to 2011 an Olympic bronze medal and eleven World Championship medals.

Career

Bertini began rowing in 1988. In 1993 he finished fourth at the Junior World Championships with the double foursome, and in 1994 the Italian foursome received the silver medal. At the 1995 World Rowing Championships , Bertini won his first medal in the adult class when he finished third with the Italian lightweight quadruple scull. The following year, the Italian four-man won the gold medal at the 1996 World Rowing Championships . After a year without an international start, Bertini was back in the Italian quad scull in 1998, winning two World Cup regattas and the title at the 1998 World Championships in Cologne.

In 1999 Bertini rowed in the Italian lightweight eighth, with which he finished third at the world championships . In 2001 Bertini sat in the lightweight four without a helmsman, at the world championships the boat took fourth place. The following year the Italian foursome won the World Championship silver behind the Danish boat. At the 2003 World Rowing Championships , the Italian four-man finished third behind the Danes and the Dutch. With the lightweight four, Bertini also managed his only Olympic participation in 2004 , the boat won the bronze medal in Athens behind the Danes and the Australian four, the lead over the fourth-placed Dutch was five hundredths of a second. In 2005, Bertini competed at the World Championships with a four-man newly occupied in two positions, the boat again won a bronze medal, this time behind the French and Irish.

After a weaker season 2006 2007 Bertini returned after nine years of belt rowing back to the Skull . At the 2007 World Championships in Munich, he took second place in the lightweight single behind the New Zealander Duncan Grant . The following year Bertini finished fourth in the single at the 2008 World Championships , at the European Championships he won silver with Daniele Gilardoni behind the Greek two-man without helmsman. In 2009 Bertini rowed in singles in the World Cup season, in the world championships he was in double fours and won his third title after 1996 and 1998.

At the European Championships , Bertini and Elia Luini won silver behind the Greek double scull and ahead of the French. Bertini and Luini also rowed in double sculls in 2010, after a second and fourth place in the World Cup and sixth place at the European Championships , the silver medal behind the British at the World Championships meant a rather unexpected success. At the 2011 World Championships , Bertini and Luini received the bronze medal behind the British and New Zealanders, and at the end of the season they both won the title at the European Championships in Plovdiv . In 2012 Bertini competed in the World Cup together with Luini, but had to cancel participation in the Olympic Games and did not compete afterwards.

With a height of 1.87 meters, Bertini had a typical competition weight of about 71 kilograms for lightweights .
