Simon Burgess

Simon Peter Burgess (* 11. September 1967 in Franklin , Tasmania ) is a former Australian Lightweight - rowers won two Olympic silver medals.

Career

Burgess received at the World Championships in 1990 in Tasmania the bronze medal in lightweight sculls along with Stephen Hawkins , Bruce Hick and Gary Lynagh , 1991 the Australian boat was rowing in the same occupation to win the title. The following year he took fifth place at lightweight one . In 1993 he was seventh with the lightweight quadruple, and in 1994 fifth. Then he switched from scull to oar rowing .

When competitions in lightweight rowing were held for the first time at the Olympic Games in 1996 , the Australian lightweight four-man without a helmsman came in sixth with Hamish Karrasch , Gary Lynagh, David Belcher and Simon Burgess. At the 1997 World Championships , Burgess was the only rower from last year's four in the Australian lightweight eight that won the title on Lac d'Aiguebelette . In 1998 Burgess returned to the foursome and won the bronze medal behind the boats from Denmark and France at the 1998 World Championships together with Darren Balmforth , Anthony Edwards and Robert Richards . In 1999 , the Australian foursome with the same line-up finished second behind the Danes and ahead of the French. At the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000 the Australian four-man competed in the same line-up, with the French winning ahead of the Australians and the Danes.

After a year break, Burgess took fourth place in the lightweight four without a helmsman at the 2002 World Championships together with Robert Mitchell , Benjamin Cureton and Glen Loftus . In 2003 the Australian four came in seventh place. In the line-up of Glen Loftus, Anthony Edwards, Benjamin Cureton and Simon Burgess, the Australian foursome reached the A-final again at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and won the silver medal behind the Danes.
