Peter Wiersum

Peter Noel Jan Wiersum (born November 1, 1984 in Sutton Coldfield , England ) is a former Dutch helmsman in rowing who reached the Olympic final with the Dutch eight from 2008 to 2016 .

Athletic career

Peter Wiersum started rowing in 2005 and made his debut in the World Cup in 2006 as the helmsman of the lightweight eight. The following year he won the title at the World Championships in Munich with the lightweight eight . In 2008 he started in eighth with no weight limit, with which he finished fourth behind the Canadians, the British and the US eighth at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing .

In 2009, the Dutch eighth won the bronze medal at the World Championships behind the Germany eighth and the Canadians . The following year, Wiersum finished in eighth place both at the European Championships and at the World Championships . At the 2011 World Championships , the eighth finished sixth. At the Olympic Games in 2012 , the Dutch eighth made it to the A-final and finished fifth.

In the post-Olympic year, the Dutch eighth won the bronze medal at the European Championships behind the Germans and the Poles. At the 2013 World Championships , the eighth finished fifth. 2014 was a weaker year for the Dutch eighth with a seventh place at the European Championships and eighth place at the World Championships in Amsterdam . A year later, only Kaj Hendriks , Boudewijn Röell and Peter Wiersum from last year's eighth were there when the Dutch eighth won the bronze medal behind the British and German at the World Championships . In 2016, the Dutch eighth won the World Cup regattas in Varese and Lucerne, but only finished sixth at the European Championships . At the 2016 Olympic Games, the Dutch eight with Kaj Hendriks, Robert Lücken , Boaz Meylink , Boudewijn Röell, Olivier Siegelaar , Dirk Uittenbogaard , Mechiel Versluis , Tone Wieten and helmsman Peter Wiersum won the bronze medal behind the British world champions and the German European champions.
