Grandstands of the Beetzsee regatta course for the European Rowing Championship 2016

The European Rowing Championships 2016 were held from May 6th to 8th, 2016 in Brandenburg an der Havel ( Germany ) on the Beetzsee regatta course in 17 different competition classes. All finals took place on May 8th.

One team per competition class from the 46 European member associations of the World Rowing Federation (FISA) was eligible to participate . A qualification regatta did not exist. According to the reporting results, 525 athletes (around 63% men and 37% women) were registered for the European Rowing Championships from 34 national rowing associations.

The European Rowing Championship took place for the second time in Brandenburg an der Havel after 1972 , where the junior world championships in rowing (1985 and 2005) as well as the U23 world championships (2008) and numerous international canoeing competitions have also been held. The German application for the European Rowing Championships 2014 in Belgrade was awarded the contract for the EM 2016 .

The German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier assumed the role of patron of the European Championships . In 2009 and 2013 he won the direct mandate in the Bundestag constituency 60 , which also includes the city of Brandenburg an der Havel. On the day of the final, he was there, watched the finals from the escort motorboat and from the stands, and honored the medal winners in the women's quadruple and men's eighth.

Results

The medal winners from the A finals are listed here. These were manned with six boats, which had to qualify for the finals via pre-run and hope runs as well as semi-finals. The length of the course was 2000 meters in all races.

Difficult wind conditions prevailed on the regatta course on the final day. The day before the finals, the schedule for the finals was changed and all runs were scheduled an hour earlier than originally planned. On the morning of the final day, an initially moderate, but increasingly freshening east wind of more than 20 km / h blew over the regatta course over the course of the morning, which the athletes perceived as a headwind falling at an angle from the port side. The seaside lanes 1 to 3 seemed to offer slightly advantageous conditions compared to the landside lanes 4 to 6. Because of the difficult to row undulating conditions, technically outstanding teams had an advantage. All of the final times were consistently significantly higher than the world's best times .
