Rowing has been going on in Brandenburg an der Havel since 1883, and canoeists conquered the Brandenburg waters a few years later. In the period that followed, numerous water sports clubs were set up in the Havelstadt, which formed the basis for the development of popular, competitive and competitive sports. Shortly after the end of the First World War , some women, men and young people tried to rebuild the sport. For this purpose, it was decided to build a regatta course on the banks of the Beetzsee.

After Leipzig, as the site of the 5th German Gymnastics and Sports Festival, did not offer sufficient opportunities for a rowing competition, Brandenburg an der Havel was shortlisted due to the water-rich surroundings. Although no one knew the exact scope of the work required for the upcoming event, the city of Brandenburg and its citizens were behind the project.

  • March 4, 1967: As a result of the commitment and performance of the local rowers, the German Gymnastics and Sports Association decided to hold the meeting of rowers with around 4,000 athletes in Brandenburg an der Havel (including the GDR championships in rowing and the elimination competitions for the European Championships).
  • June 4, 1967: After further consultations between those responsible in the city and representatives of the German Rowing Sports Association of the GDR , consent to the major project was declared. The basic concept for the construction of a regatta course on the west bank of the Beetzsee was approved.
  • September 15, 1967: The construction of the regatta course began.
  • August 17, 1968: FISA President Keller (Switzerland), FISA Vice President Hansen (Denmark) and FISA General Secretary Riolo (Italy) visited the construction site of the regatta course for the first time.
  • July 18 to 20, 1969: After a 20-month construction period, the regatta course was officially opened and the first meeting of the German Rowing Sports Association of the GDR was successfully carried out on schedule.
  • November 3, 1969: The Brandenburg regatta course received the classification for the execution of European and international championships. A sports facility of international importance was created at the Beetzsee. It was the twelfth regatta course in the world that was built according to the Albano system (six lanes, 12.5 to 15 meters wide, marked by colored buoy chains).

In the course of its 30-year history, many later world and Olympic champions began their sporting careers in the Havel city. On November 27, 1999, the 30-year history of the regatta course was honored at a festive event.

The German Rowing Association initially applied for the Beetzsee regatta course to host the 2015 World Rowing Championships , but withdrew its application in May 2011 due to excessive financial risks.

By the end of the GDR, the regatta course had seen numerous highlights. Three international rowing regattas, two canoeing events for the " Birgit-Fischer -Beetzsee-Cup", two German championships in canoe racing, two German under23 championships in rowing and four international motorboat races with world championship races of formulas 1 and 3.

The regatta course is also used by athletes from other sports. German championships in long-distance swimming and barefoot water skiing , international model boat races , state championships in inflatable slalom and triathlon competitions of the Brandenburg schools have already taken place here . In addition, the sports facility has also been used as a trade fair and exhibition site since the early 1990s, e.g. B. for the annually recurring leisure fair (spring) and building fair (autumn).

  • Since 1990: The city of Brandenburg an der Havel and the state of Brandenburg made 1.185 million DM available for renovation and expansion work, whereby u. a. the referee tower with its technical systems was renovated, the sanitary facilities were modernized, the entire rope system for marking the race track was renewed and the equipment technology was brought up to a high technical level.
  • 2003: Repair of the regatta course on the occasion of the upcoming Junior World Championships in rowing . Modernization of the timing system.
  • 2004: Installation of a permanent video screen on the water.
  • February 11, 2009: The Brandenburg Environment Minister Dietmar Woidke hands over the approval notice for the relocation of the island of Hünensteg , whereby the regatta course can be expanded to eight lanes and thus senior world championships for rowers can be held. This work has been completed since 2010.
