Olympic Games on postage stamps of the German Post of the GDR

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Last Olympic block of the GDR, motif originally planned for 1984

The Olympic Games were honored on 84 postage stamps from the GDR Deutsche Post . These included six stamps that were issued as a sideline and seven stamp blocks , each containing one stamp.

For the first time took athlete of the GDR in 1956 as part of the all-German team at the Olympic Games in part. That year the first two stamps on the subject were also published. In 1964 the most motifs were issued with fourteen stamps in one year.

Boycott of the 1984 Summer Olympics

The editions of 1984 are a specialty, there were only five motifs for the Winter Games in Sarajevo at that time . The planned six individual stamps and the stamp block in honor of the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles were not issued by the Olympic boycott of the then Eastern Bloc countries . These stamps appeared four years later for the 1988 Games, only the year and the occasion (Games of the XXIV Olympiad 1988) were changed on the motifs .

The first three stamps and the stamp pad had already been printed and were later - albeit not completely - destroyed. Four years after the planned issue date, visitors to the Leipzig Autumn Fair were able to purchase a sheet of stamps from each of these stamps. The Deutsche Bundespost, the legal successor of the GDR's Deutsche Post , sued for the return, but could not prevail. These unissued stamps are therefore among the sought-after rarities in German philately and are accordingly expensive.

Four years earlier, at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, Western countries boycotted the Games. The planned Olympic stamp was not issued in the Federal Republic of Germany either, but some specimens of these came into circulation as Gscheidle stamps .
