particularities
This year of stamps was the first in the history of Deutsche Post in the GDR. The GDR was founded on October 7, 1949 in the area of the former Soviet Occupation Zone (SBZ), and just two days later its post issued its first stamp with a face value of 50 Pfennig , which with its topic (see below) was already in the issuing program the Soviet Zone for 1949 was included. The stamps of this year still bore the inscription "Deutsche Post"; it was not until 1950 that the impression was "German Democratic Republic", and in later years also "GDR".
The stamps of the Soviet occupation zone initially retained their franking power in the GDR territory and were individually invalid after postage determination depending on the replacement of the postage levels with newly issued GDR stamps. The last time stamps from the Soviet occupation zone could be used for postal purposes was on December 31, 1951.
