Establishment in the GDR was a definitive series of Deutsche Post in the German Democratic Republic , which was issued between 1973 and 1981 . The Lipsia stamp catalog of the GDR describes it as a socialist construction in the GDR . Here the name of the Michel catalog is chosen. From 1990 it was replaced by the definitive series of buildings and monuments . These stamps were valid for postage until October 2, 1990 . After the German reunification on October 3, 1990, the postage stamps of the Deutsche Bundespost were used.

All fifteen motifs were designed by Manfred Gottschall . There were two output sizes of all motifs and all of them were available on sheet of stamps and in gravure . Of the 36 values, there were six that were issued as small-format roll stamps in halftone rotogravure printing . Two of them also appeared in stamp sheets: These are the first small-format issues in 1973 with the Neptune Fountain and Lenin Monument in Berlin as the motifs .

Some of the monuments and buildings depicted on the stamps no longer exist, such as the Lenin Monument in Berlin (demolished in 1991), the self-service restaurant Ahornblatt on Fischerinsel in Berlin (demolished in 2000), the "fist" monument by Heinz Beberniß on the Ernst-Thälmann-Platz in Halle (demolished in 2003) and the Palace of the Republic in Berlin (demolished 2006–2008).
