The postage stamp year 1988 of the German Post Office of the German Democratic Republic comprised 50 individual special stamps , seven stamp blocks with nine special stamps and four miniature sheets with nine special stamps. Eight stamps were printed together; there were four pairs with an interior decorative field. For the first time there was a motif with an ornamental field of different colors. No definitive stamps were issued this year . A total of 81 motifs appeared.

All postage stamp issues since 1964 as well as the 2- mark values of the definitive series President Wilhelm Pieck and the definitive series of State Council Chairman Walter Ulbricht , published since 1961, originally had unlimited postage validity . With the reunification after October 2, 1990, all brands lost their validity.

particularities

After 1983, it was the second year that seven stamp pads were issued. This is the highest number of blocks issued by the GDR's Deutsche Post in one year.

Four editions are known to have been drafted four years in advance and to be issued in 1984. These are the motifs for the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles , which were boycotted by the Soviet Union and eighteen other real socialist states . On the stamps that were not issued at the time, the year 1984 was replaced by 1988 and the Roman numeral of the Olympiad XXIII was replaced by XXIV .
