Mission overview

The launch took place on August 29, 1988 from the Soviet spaceport Baikonur in the Kazakh SSR . Lyachow was a commander and trained for solo flights with the Soyuz spacecraft for rescue purposes. He steered the spaceship alone. Polyakov and Mohmand were inexperienced science astronauts. It was the job of the doctor Polyakov to remain on the Mir with Maranov and Titov in order to monitor their state of health during the last months of a one-year long stay. Mohmand took part in the flight as part of the Interkosmos program and thus became the first Afghan in space .

The experiments on board the Mir space station primarily concerned earth exploration, medicine and materials research. For example, deposits of various mineral resources were searched for and water resources and possible earthquake regions, especially in the mountainous regions of Afghanistan, were examined. The topographic camera Kate 140, the multichannel spectrometer MKS-M, the spectrum analyzer Spektr 256 and a hand-held camera were used (Schamsched experiment). Medical examinations concerned the study of movement disorders in weightlessness.

While preparing for landing, the Soyuz on-board computer was overloaded by newly installed software. The firing of the brake rocket was postponed by two orbits of the earth while the old software version was activated.

The landing took place on December 21, 1988 after 1807 orbits around the earth, around 160 kilometers southeast of Sheqazghan in Kazakhstan . The flight lasted 114 days, 5 hours, 33 minutes and 49 seconds.
