Mission overview

The seventh permanent crew of the Mir space station continued the scientific work of their predecessors. This included earth exploration, protein manufacturing, biological and medical research, and maintenance and repair work. This also included the attempt to close the jammed hatch on the Kwant 2 research module when disembarking on October 29 (3:45 a.m.) , which was only partially successful. One of the new features of the flight was the arrival of an enlarged transport spacecraft Progress M-5, which has a return capsule with a payload capacity of 150 kilograms. Supply and research material arrived earlier with the transport spaceship Progress M-4.
