Soyuz MS-11 was a flight by the Russian Soyuz spacecraft to the International Space Station . As part of the ISS program, the flight is designated ISS AF-57S. It was the 57th visit by a Soyuz spaceship to the ISS and the 163rd flight in the Soyuz program.

crew

Main crew

The NASA astronaut Serena Auñón-Chancellor was originally intended for this flight. Anne McClain moved to when Auñón-Chancellor on Soyuz MS-09 was brought forward to where Jeanette Epps to replace.

Substitute team

Skworzow, Parmitano and Morgan also formed the backup crew for the subsequent Soyuz MS-12 mission , before they flew to the ISS with Soyuz MS-13 themselves in July 2019 .

Mission description

Soyuz MS-11 was originally scheduled to launch on December 20, 2018. The spaceship was supposed to bring three space travelers to the ISS in order to increase the ISS expedition 58 from two to five people. Due to the false start of Soyuz MS-10 , this plan could not be carried out; all manned launches were suspended. After this lockdown was lifted on November 1, 2018, Soyuz MS-11 was supposed to launch earlier than planned in order not to leave the ISS unmanned after Soyuz MS-09 returned . The start has therefore been brought forward to December 3, 2018. Soyuz MS-11 paired in "express mode" as planned. H. after six hours and four orbits the earth , at the Russian ISS module Poisk .

Oleg Kononenko, David Saint-Jacques and Anne McClain then spent a good six and a half months on board the ISS. Because the MS-10 crew was no longer available, they took part in three instead of the usual two expeditions, from Expedition 57 to 59 , but the first of these only for a good two weeks. Kononenko became the third unplanned commander in the history of the ISS, serving on two consecutive expeditions (58 and 59).

During Expedition 58, the station was only manned by the three MS-11 space travelers. During this time, SpaceX's first Crew Dragon spaceship also paid a visit to the ISS.

The undocking took place on June 24, 2019 at 23:25 UTC, so the ISS expedition 60 began on the station with Alexei Ovchinin as commander. The landing took place the following day about 3½ hours later in the Kazakh steppe 148 km southeast of Scheskasgan . RIA Novosti reported on the same day, citing the live commentary from NASA TV during the landing, that after the spaceship was decoupled from the ISS and the braking maneuver to leave orbit, a defect in the fuel supply of the main engine had occurred. However, this was remedied by switching to the reserve system, and the flight could be completed as planned. Because of this RIA report, the media sometimes spoke of an "emergency" during the landing, which Roskosmos rejected. An analysis of the telemetry data showed that all on-board systems had worked in strict accordance with the flight program. The reserve system was only activated as a precaution.
