ISS Expedition 53 is the mission name for the 53rd long-term crew of the International Space Station (ISS). The mission began with the disengagement of the Soyuz MS-04 spacecraft from the ISS on September 2, 2017 and ended with the disengagement of Soyuz MS-05 on December 14, 2017.

Substitute team

Since Expedition 20, no official replacement team has been announced due to the permanent training for the six-person crew. Unofficially, the backup crews of the two Soyuz feeder spaceships MS-05 and MS-06 (see there) are used as substitute crews for Expedition 53. As a rule, these crews are deployed two missions later.

Mission description

Crew exchange

On September 13, 2017 - a good ten days after the start of the expedition - the feeder spaceship Soyuz MS-06 docked with the ISS after a six-hour flight; the crew of the space station was increased again to six people.

The day before the Soyuz MS-05 undocked with Randolph Bresnik, Sergei Rjasanski and Paolo Nespoli, Alexander Missurkin took command of the ISS . Together with Mark Vande Hei and Joseph Acaba, he formed the initial crew of the subsequent ISS Expedition 54 .

Freight traffic

Dragon CRS-12 shortly after undocking

On September 17th, Dragon CRS-12 was detached from the Harmony module by Paolo Nespoli and Randolph Bresnik using the Canadarm2 robotic arm and placed in its own orbit. The splashing in the Pacific took place on the same day.

On October 16 at 11:04 UTC, Progress docked MS-07 with the Pirs module. The freighter is to remain connected to the ISS for eight months before being decoupled in June 2018 when loaded with waste and burned up over the South Pacific.

Cygnus OA-8 just before docking

On November 14th, Randolph Bresnik and Paolo Nespoli used the Canadarm2 gripper arm and captured the cargo spaceship Cygnus OA-8 (called "SS Gene Cernan "). Cygnus was rotated by commands from the ground station and coupled to the underside of the Unity module .

Cygnus CRS OA-8 (called "SS Gene Cernan") was decoupled from the ISS on December 6th.

External works

On October 5th, Randy Bresnik and Mark Vande Hei replaced one of two Latching End Effectors (LEE) on the Canadarm2 gripper arm as part of an EVA .

On October 10, Randy Bresnik and Mark Vande Hei went on a second field assignment. They finished their work on the new Latching End Effectors (LEE) and replaced cameras on the Destiny module.

Joseph Acaba on the third spacecraft mission

On October 20, Randy Bresnik and Joseph Acaba conducted the third field assignment. The replacement of a defective camera on the Canadarm2 , the replacement of a fuse on the Dextre , the installation of an HD camera on the EHDCA and preparation of potentially required spare parts took place.
