ISS Expedition 39 is the mission name for the 39th long-term crew of the International Space Station (ISS). The mission began with the disengagement of the Soyuz TMA-10M spacecraft from the ISS on March 11, 2014. The end was marked by the disengagement of the Soyuz TMA-11M on May 13, 2014.

Substitute team

Since Expedition 20, no official replacement team has been announced due to the permanent training for the six-person crew. Unofficially, the backup crews of the two Soyuz feeder spaceships TMA-11M and TMA-12M (see there) are used as replacement crews for Expedition 39. As a rule, these crews are deployed two missions later.

Mission description

The expedition began with the departure of the Soyuz TMA-10M spacecraft on March 11, 2014. At the end of March, the crew was reinforced by three newcomers who came to the ISS with the Soyuz TMA-12M .

The focus of the work on board was scientific research in the fields of astronomy , atmospheric research , biology , earth exploration , medicine , physics and technology . Most of the experiments were largely automated and only occasionally require the astronaut's attention. Investigations in the medical-biological field as well as in the exploration of the earth required a greater amount of supervision. Much working time was also spent on maintenance and repair work as well as on physical activity to maintain health.

In March and April u. a. Experiments for the measurement of accelerations within the station ( Relaksazija , Space Acceleration Measurement System), the radiation measurement ( Matrjoschka , Radiation Monitoring), for determining the behavior of colloids (Advanced Colloids experiment) , the flow behavior in weightlessness (Capillary Flow Experiment) to Combustion processes on solids (Burning and Suppression of Solids) , oceanology (Seine) , phenomena in the atmosphere or ionosphere ( Uragan , Albedo , Obstanowka ) as well as psychological and medical studies on cooperation with ground stations (Interactions) contribute to changing perception longer space flights (optical illusions through reversible figures, reaction time), physical changes during stays in weightlessness (blood, saliva and urine samples) as well as testing a system for electrical stimulation of muscles as a substitute for athletic training. Video conferences were also held with relatives, elementary school students, participants in a NASA competition, and various television stations, including an approximately two-hour long with the National Geographic Channel .

Maintenance and repair work mainly concerned a toilet in Tranquility , a treadmill, the water treatment system, a food warmer, space suits ( EMUs ) and their supply systems, the life support systems, fans and filters for circulating and keeping the air clean, and various facilities in which experiments are housed are.

On April 11, a replacement computer box on the lattice structure of the space station failed. It functions as a multiplexer / demultiplexer for commands to various robotic components on the outside. It was replaced on April 23rd as part of an external mission.

Freight traffic

On April 7, the freighter Progress M-22M (ISS 54P) cast off from the station. On April 9, Progress M-23M (ISS 55P) took off and docked at Pirs after a short flight .

The launch of Dragon CRS-3 (ISS SpX-3) was postponed several times for various reasons and took place on April 18th. Two days later the freighter was maneuvered under the station and attached to the lower port of the Harmony module using the Canadarm2 station manipulator . Dragon CRS-3 brought 2,089 kg of cargo and 1,563 kg from the station to Earth.

On April 23, Progress uncoupled M-21M after transferring new software from the rear of the station for a further test of a new rendezvous system. The reconnection succeeded two days later without any problems.

Orbit maneuvers

On March 13, the orbit of the station with the engines of the Freighter Progress M-21M coupled at the stern was raised by about 2 km in the course of an eight-minute propulsion phase. On March 16, an additional maneuver was required to avoid getting too close to a piece of debris from the Meteor 2-5 satellite , which was launched in 1979 and has long since been out of order. For this purpose, the engines of the Freighter Progress M-22M, which was coupled to the Pirs module on the underside of the station, were put into operation for a good seven minutes.

A regular orbit elevation of 3.7 km was made on March 29th. On April 3, another part of space junk , a Sylda equipment from an Ariane launch, had to be avoided. A drive phase of 3:40 minutes, during which the runway was raised by 800 m, was sufficient.

Further orbital increases by the Progress M-21M took place on April 12 by 3.4 km and on April 29 by 2.15 km.

External works

Steve Swanson on the lattice structure S0

On April 23, Steve Swanson and Rick Mastracchio disembarked from the ISS for 1 hour and 36 minutes to exchange a computer box that functions as a multiplexer / demultiplexer on the lattice structure S0 . The reserve box failed on April 11th.
