There he was involved in the software development for the space shuttle , checked the software at the Shuttle Avionics Integration Laboratory and developed start and stop procedures for the astronaut's office. From 1993 to 1996 he worked in the control center and was responsible for the navigation calculations on a total of 17 missions as Guidance and Procedures Officer.
In April 1996, Mastracchio was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA. After his training as a mission specialist, he took on tasks in the IT department of the astronauts office, helped with planning for the International Space Station (ISS) and for spacecraft missions and supervised improvements to the shuttle cockpit.
STS-106
On September 8, 2000, Mastracchio flew as a mission specialist on the space shuttle Atlantis to the space station. During the twelve-day STS-106 mission , the ISS was prepared for the arrival of the first long-term crew. Batteries, current converters, a toilet and other technical systems were installed on the ISS. In total, the Atlantis brought more than three tons of supplies to the station. During an outboard mission, cables were laid between the newly arrived Zvezda module and the space station.
STS-118
In August 2007, Mastracchio carried out its second space flight with STS-118 . He had to stop an outdoor assignment prematurely, during which he had cut three out of five layers of his glove on a defective handle.
STS-131
On December 5, 2008, Mastracchio was named as a mission specialist for the STS-131 mission . The take-off took place on April 5, 2010, the landing on April 20, 2010. Together with Clayton Anderson , he carried out three space missions .
ISS expeditions 38/39
Mastracchio was nominated as a flight engineer for ISS expeditions 38 and 39 in February 2011 . From November 7, 2013, he worked for six months on board the International Space Station.
