The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) is a private technical college in Troy , New York with two other campuses in Hartford and Groton , Connecticut . The RPI is the oldest technical college in North America: It was founded on November 5, 1824 by the scientist Amos Eaton and the politician, general and philanthropist Stephen Van Rensselaer III. founded as Rensselaer School.
There are six faculties : Architecture, Engineering, the Faculty of Humanities, Fine Arts and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Information Technology and Web Science , the Faculty of Business, and a Faculty of Interdisciplinary Science. In the 2013–2014 academic year, the institute had around 7,000 students graduating from 65 courses.
The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is one of the top 50 universities in the United States according to the US News & World Report and was named the "New Ivy " by Newsweek in 2006 . The American Society of Civil Engineers added the RPI to the List of Historic Civil Engineering Landmarks in 2010 .
Shirley Ann Jackson has been the President of the RPI since 1999 .
Sports
The university's sports teams are the RPI Engineers . The university's ice hockey team competes in the National Collegiate Athletic Association 's US college championships .
