Jon Hall (computer scientist)
Jon "Maddog" Hall (born August 7, 1950 ) is one of the founders of the international open source initiative and chairman of the Linux Professional Institute .
He has been in the computer industry since 1969 and, according to his official biography , has been using Unix since 1977 and Linux since 1994 . Since 1995 he has been the head of Linux International , a US- based non-profit organization promoting Linux.
He studied at Drexel University and later at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy (New York) . After his studies , he worked at Aetna Life and Casualty at IBM - mainframes . Then he became the dean of the computer science faculty at Hartford State Technical College , where his students began to call him mad dog . He later became a systems administrator at Bell Laboratories and then worked for DEC ( Digital Equipment Corporation ) for 16 years . During this time he also met Linus Torvalds and supported him in porting Linux to the 64- bit Alpha processor .

In June 2012, Hall published an article in Linux magazine in honor of Alan Turing , in which he announced that he was gay.
