The Linux Magazine is a special-interest magazine that by Computec Media is issued. It is aimed at readers who work professionally with Linux . Linux-Magazin is the second oldest Linux magazine in the world (and according to its own information, the oldest in Europe). The first edition was published in October 1994 as a DELUG information sheet . The magazine's slogan is “The magazine for Linux professionals”.

The printed edition was given in 2013 as 36,000 copies. In 2017 it was only 19,000 units, which was reduced to 16,400 units for 2020.

Frequency of publication

The magazine appears on the first Thursday of every month. One issue costs € 6.90 in retail in Germany , € 7.80 in Austria and CHF 11.50 in Switzerland . Since the 11/2008 issue, there has been a parallel issue of the so-called DELUG DVD available for free at the kiosk for € 8.90 (€ 9.90 in Austria and CHF 14.50 in Switzerland). This booklet with data carrier was previously only available in the form of a special subscription.

A special issue with special topics such as network, security or hardware is published irregularly. There are also editions of the Linux magazine in English and Polish as cooperative publishers .

Editor-in-chief

The current editor-in-chief is Jörg Luther. Jan Kleinert was on the job from November 2000 to 2019. other predecessors were Tom Schwaller and Harald Milz.

Content

The Linux magazine is aimed primarily at professional Linux users. Main topics are dealt with every month. These come from different areas of the Linux environment: Internet applications, programming, security, etc.

In addition, there are a few fixed categories that are represented in every issue:

  • Current: News from the Linux world
  • Numbers and trends
  • Kernel news
  • Insecurity Bulletin by Mark Vogelsberger
  • The column “From the everyday life of a sysadmin” by Charly Kühnast
  • Programming snapshot by Michael Schilli (before 2017: Perl snapshot)
  • Core technology (know-how on the Linux kernel) and a series on C ++

It should be mentioned that Linux-Magazin was the only German-language magazine that reported in detail on news from the security environment (approx. 5 pages per issue) on a monthly basis. The author for this was Mark Vogelsberger from 1999 to 2011, the supervising editor since 2009 Nils Magnus, previously Achim Leitner. The idea for InSecurity News originally came from Mark Vogelsberger. InSecurity News has meanwhile found its way into the international editions of Linux Magazin. InSecurity News was replaced as an online blog in May 2011 by the Insecurity Bulletin. This now offers more detailed articles and analyzes of current security vulnerabilities. The Linux-Magazin website also provides a free magazine / article archive, with only the paid content of the last ten issues being excluded from free access (as of April 2018).

More magazines

The magazine of the same name, which is aimed at end users, emerged from the LinuxUser rubric . The magazine easyLinux was also distributed by the same publisher , which is aimed particularly at Linux beginners without prior knowledge and has been integrated into Linux users since the end of 2018.

The world's oldest print magazine (started in March 1994), which deals almost exclusively with Linux, was the English-language Linux Journal , which has not been available as an online edition since August 2019.
