EasyLinux was a quarterly trade journal with the aim of explaining how to get started with Linux and switch from Windows . It belonged to the Linux magazine family of the Computec Media Group and was founded in 2003 by Hans-Georg Eßer, who was also its editor-in-chief until the end. The magazine was published from June 2003 to October 2018.

history

In March and April 2003, two so-called “starter kits” with CDs or DVDs from the two largest distributions at the time, SuSE and Red Hat Linux , were published in advance . In June 2003, the EasyLinux magazine itself appeared for the first time, referring to the starter kits. Both installation instructions for the starter kits and instructions for the use of Linux for beginners could be found in the magazine. Shortly afterwards, Mandrake was also included as a starter kit.

A reorientation took place in June 2005: With each issue, CDs with open source programs and DVDs with security updates were issued for the respective distribution. At the same time, Fedora Core was deleted as a distribution without replacement and more reference was made to Debian-based applications such as Knoppix and Ubuntu . With issue 2/2006, both the layout and the content were revised. Another reorientation took place on July 13th: In addition to a new layout, the number of issues was limited to 4 issues per year. This was justified with a decline in advertising and sales.

With the publication of issue 8 - 10/2018 the magazine was discontinued. The topics are continued in the sister magazine LinuxUser . There will be an “EasyLinux” section from issue 11/2018.

Article archive

Articles older than a year are usually available free of charge on the EasyLinux website; in the case of more recent editions this only applies to a selection of texts. Since mid-2009, a community edition of the magazine has appeared at the same time as the magazine, offering 32 pages from the current magazine in PDF format with the same layout as the printed version. The archive of recent articles (from 2009) is (together with the LinuxUser archive) on the Linux Community portal.
