Left word

Left word denotes an annual reading by authors in Vienna .

These readings have been held in the Vienna Prater since 1975 and therefore for 40 years now as part of the Volksstimmefest , a press and public festival of the KPÖ . On both days of the festival, which always takes place on a weekend in late summer, prose and poetry are performed on a small stage . One focus of the contemporary literature presented is the focus on topics from the world of work and on everyday experiences in a critical realism .

history

This cultural-political initiative of the KPÖ started at the cultural-political forum of the KPÖ in 1974 and took place as an author reading for the first time at the Volksstimmefest in 1975. This conference was dominated by the question of the political relationship between high culture and mass culture as well as the question of the politically necessary creation of an alternative and democratic cultural establishment. Numerous cultural workers who were well-known in later years took part in this cultural-political conference. The cultural-political pioneer and initiator of the “Left Word” was Ernst Wimmer , followed by Arthur West and Helmut Rizy . Since 2008 the “Linke Wort” and the publication of the associated anthology have been organized by Roman Gutsch and Christoph Kepplinger. Many now well-known authors took their first steps in the literature interested public with this reading series. The “Left Word” made important currents and authors of Austrian literature of the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s accessible to a wider public. Among others, Peter Turrini , Helmut Zenker and Elfriede Jelinek deserve special mention . In the years from 2000 u. a. Richard Schuberth , Petra Piuk , Gertraud Klemm , Erwin Riess , Sophie Reyer , Eva Schörkhuber , Markus Köhle , Nadine Kegele , Rolf Schwendter , Marlene Streeruwitz and Julian Schutting participated in the readings.
