Richard Schuberth
Richard Alexander Schuberth (born March 12, 1968 in Ybbs an der Donau , Lower Austria ) is an Austrian writer , social critic and satirist .
biography
Richard Schuberth grew up in Emmersdorf an der Donau , at the entrance to the Wachau . He studied ethnology and a combination of philosophy , psychology and history in Vienna and completed his studies with a diploma thesis on nationalism , ethnicity and culturalism (which he published as a book 20 years later under the title Before the peoples knew that they are what ) . In addition to his artistic activities, he worked as a music journalist , author of promotional texts for musicians of the AustrianWorld music and jazz scene , designer of radio features and DJ . In 2004 he founded the music festival Balkan Fever , of which he was artistic director until the festival was closed in spring 2012.
Artistic creation
Richard Schuberth worked as a cabaret artist between 1990 and 1992 . Since 1995 he has written articles, essays , reviews , poems , aphorisms and polemics as well as prose , scripts and dramas. He also works as a cartoonist and actor . He writes songs for his wife Jelena Popržan .
In 2006/07 he wrote a 30-part essay series on Karl Kraus for the Viennese street newspaper Augustin (for which he made cartoons under the pseudonym Tricky Dicky ) , which was published as a book in 2008 by Turia + Kant and in an expanded new edition in 2016 by Klever Verlag . His collected essays, polemics, articles and glosses are gathered in the two anthologies Rust and Acid (2014) and Unrest before the Storm (2017). Based on Ambrose Bierce 's dictionary of aphorisms, The Devil's Dictionary from 1911, Schuberth published The New Dictionary of the Devil .
The feminist philosophical picaresque chronicle of a cheerful conspiracy , published in 2015 in the Paul Zsolnay Verlag , came up with the shortlist of aspects Literature Award of the ZDF for the best German-language prose debut and was for the Austrian Literature Prize Alpha nominated. Joseph Wälzholz judged in the literary world : “There is probably no contemporary novel that is so timely and at the same time so timeless. With a joke that is second to none (and will hardly be to be found), Schuberth incorporates the most profound reflections here. […] Which book! Richard Schuberth has already written the novel of the year. "
Schuberth's first drama Friday in Sarajevo (completed in 1998 and premiered in Bosnia by the Ars Vivendi ensemble), which Peter Handke called a “beautiful, evil, clear piece”, marks the first literary expression of his longstanding interest in the history and culture of Southeast Europe. Four more socially critical comedies followed . How Branka dressed up celebrated its premiere in 2011 under the direction of Aslı Kışlal (daskunst) in the 3raum anatomy theater .
Richard Schuberth won the Carl Mayer Screenplay Award three times (2003, 2004 and 2009) at the Grazer Diagonale . Only one of his scripts was made into a film ( Aquanitis , director: Peter Mahlknecht), incidentally the only one that had not received an award before he made his debut as a director himself in 2015, with an abridged version of his script The wondrous adventures of Nasreddin Kürtler . The 17-minute short film premiered at the Schikaneder Kino in Vienna .
Schuberth's affinity for world music is little known. His first book publication was the 500-page music lexicon CrossRoots , a critical introduction to Irish, Scottish, English and Breton folk and roots music. Since childhood Schuberth studied ethnic music from Europe, Asia and America. In his work as a music journalist, director of the Balkan Fever festival , DJ, promoter of musicians and discourse critic, he has always been against culturalising and conservative readings of world music and advocated atypical approaches.
Karl-Markus Gauß wrote about him: “As an essayist, critic and polemicist, Schuberth consistently asserts himself against the intellectual conformism that has known opinions about things known. As if that weren't enough, he knows what he has to say, to formulate it sharply and elegantly. ”And Armin Sattler ( ORF.at ) sums up the cover of Schuberth's text collection Unrest before the Storm :“ One of the last to provide the evidence that language composition does not mean a diligent task, but loyalty to the cause and humanity. But one of the first to alloy commitment with frivolous ease and wit. The comparison with Karl Kraus limps if you don't add Oscar Wilde as a second leg. "
