Emmersdorf an der Donau is an Austrian market town in the Melk district in Lower Austria with 1760 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020).

geography

Emmersdorf an der Donau is located in the Waldviertel in Lower Austria and is the gateway to the Wachau , as the name suggests, on the Danube , across from Melk . The area of ​​the market town covers 29.69 km², 52.55% of the area is forested.

According to the results of the 2001 census , there were 1706 inhabitants. In 1991 the market town had 1631 inhabitants, in 1981 1473 and in 1971 1429 inhabitants.

The municipal council has 19 seats. In the 2005 municipal council elections , the ÖVP received 13 seats and the SPÖ 6 seats. In the municipal council elections in 2010 , the distribution of seats in the municipal council did not change. The municipal council elections in Lower Austria in 2015 resulted in the following distribution: 11 ÖVP, 4 SPÖ, and 4 GREENS.

Culture and sights

  • Catholic parish church Emmersdorf hl. Nikolaus: A late Gothic pillar basilica, which is surrounded in the south by a late medieval lining wall with massive buttresses. The long choir was built in the 4th quarter of the 15th century. The massive basement of the presented west tower also dates from the 15th century. In 1738 a baroque octagonal tower with 4 corner obelisks was added.
  • Catholic market chapel Emmersdorf hl. Mary Magdalene
  • Luberegg Castle : The elongated castle also includes two low round towers near the embankment, which until 1811 were used to illuminate the loading of timber onto ships at night.
