The Melk district is an administrative district of the Province of Lower Austria .

history

The district of Melk was formed in 1896 from parts of the districts of Scheibbs (former judicial district Mank ), Amstetten (judicial district Ybbs in the former borders) and St. Pölten (judicial district Melk in the former borders) (RGBl. No. 135/1896).

In 1939 the majority of the abandoned Pöggstall district (former judicial districts Pöggstall and Persenbeug ) was added.

From 1951 to 1971 there was a political branch in Pöggstall .

geography

The district borders the Zwettl district in the north, the Krems district in the northeast, the St. Pölten district in the east, the Scheibbs district in the south, the Amstetten district in the south-west and Upper Austria in the west. Branch offices of the district administration are located in Pöggstall and Ybbs .

The part north of the Danube is part of the landscape of the Waldviertel , the part south of the Danube is part of the Mostviertel . For the spatial planning of the state it belongs almost entirely to the main region Mostviertel with the exception of three municipalities (Melk, Emmersdorf an der Donau and Schönbühel-Aggsbach), which belong to the main region of Lower Lower Austria .
