history

Little is known about the early settlement. The Celtic Kingdom of Noricum also extended to the north bank of the Danube. At the time of the Roman Provincia Noricum , the Danube formed the border river, the Danube Limes .

A stone slab still set up on the church square (see picture) is often referred to as a sacrificial stone of Celtic origin. An interpretation of this kind lacks any scientific basis, but it cannot be completely ruled out either.

The area around Maria Taferl belonged in the Middle Ages to the area of Ostarrichi at the time of the Babenbergs and later to the area of the Habsburgs . For a long time it was in the territory of the Lords of Weissenberg, whose seat was in the neighboring municipality of Münichreith . It can be assumed that various districts of Maria Taferl were founded in the Middle Ages. The story of today's Maria Taferl market begins in the 17th century .

  • The parish and pilgrimage church of Maria Taferl was built around a wayside shrine of the Virgin Mary as Mother of Grace. This is also the origin of the name 'Maria Taferl'. According to tradition, this statue was donated by Alexander Schinagel, a forester who was miraculously cured after a serious illness. The woodworker Thomas Pachmann is said to have experienced a miraculous healing in this place. After trying to cut down an oak tree with an image of the Crucified on it, he injured himself badly on both legs. After a prayer to the Blessed Mother Mary, the life-threatening wounds stopped bleeding. The old oak was destroyed by fire in 1755 and the image of Our Lady of Mercy was damaged.
The construction of the parish and pilgrimage church lasted from 1660 to 1710. Construction was started by the imperial architect Georg Gerstenbrandt and the Italian Carlo Lurago . The dome, which was built by Jakob Prandtauer between 1708 and 1710, the master builder who is also responsible for the current appearance of Melk Abbey , is famous . The architectural style of the basilica is baroque , the generous use of gold leaf and the decoration of the ceiling with frescoes by Antonio Beduzzi are particularly noteworthy . In the center of the high altar by Joseph Matthias Götz is the miraculous image, a Pieta (Vesper image). The two portraits of the side altars, the Holy Family and the crucifixion of Christ are by Martin Johann Schmidt , called "Kremser Schmidt". The richly decorated, gilded pulpit, built in 1726 based on the model of the Passau cathedral pulpit, framed with rich figure and relief decorations by the sculptors Peter Widerin and Matthias Tempe, is worth seeing . At the rear of the basilica there is access to the crypt and treasury.
According to inscriptions inside the basilica, the construction of the basilica should give new courage to the inhabitants of the region devastated by the plague , Turkish wars and the Thirty Years' War . Counter-Reformation intentions in the heartland of the Catholic House of Habsburg should also be accepted. This is particularly supported by the location of Maria Taferl as a widely visible manifestation of the Catholic faith on the main traffic route at that time, the Danube.
There are several stories of angel processions from the 17th century. The beginning of the tradition of pilgrimages to Maria Taferl dates back to this time . In 1760 alone there were 700 processions and over 19,000 masses are said to have been read. The treasury in the basilica provides information about the extent and origin of the pilgrims. It displays gifts from pilgrims who have been made because of illnesses and supposed or actual healing . Other sources for the importance of Maria Taferl as a place of pilgrimage are provided by the stone cross, a memorial stone of the citizens of Freistadt for deceased pilgrims. It is also a documentation of the arduous nature of the pilgrimage at that time. From the murdered heir to the throne Franz Ferdinand , who lived with his family in the neighboring Artstetten Castle , regular church visits to Maria Taferl are known. According to popular belief, the water from Maria Taferl's springs is said to help particularly with eye problems.
Maria Taferl has been a minor basilica since 1947 .
After starting work in 2004, the completion of the extensive renovation and refurbishment of the basilica was celebrated on September 12, 2010, combined with the celebration of two anniversaries: 350 years of laying the foundation stone (1660) and 300 years of completion of the church building (1710). - The last interior renovation was about 50 years ago, an exterior renovation was made in 1982. In 1998 the two spire helmets were re-covered. In the course of the general renovation of the interior of the pilgrimage church, which has now been completed, the treasury of the basilica was also renovated and reopened on April 11, 2008.

The second with a mine train that goes into and out of a mine, and above it on a mountain road a cyclist who drives from one place to a dairy hut and back. - Free entry (voluntary donation)
