history
In ancient times, the area was part of the Noricum province .
The etymological root for "Krummnußbaum" is "in the crooked walnut tree." The place name is derived from the crooked nut trees that stood at the fishermen's huts on the Danube. This point served as a striking signpost for everyone who had to cross the Danube, especially in the north-south connection.
A stone sickle knife from the Neolithic Age, which was found in Annastift in 1964, proves that the area around and from Krummnussbaum is an old settlement area. The location of the market was probably suitable for the Romans back then to defend their northern border, because a watchtower is said to have stood on the “Burgstalleiten”, in front of the Roman camp Arelape in Pöchlarn. Because remains can be seen on the "Burgstalleiten", but the age cannot be definitively determined due to the type of complex, as similar fortifications occur both prehistorically and prehistorically. As early as the turn of the millennium, today's municipal area was used economically, and many of the old land names have been preserved in the rural population.
Population development
According to the results of the 2001 census , there were 1,347 inhabitants. In 1991 the market town had 1,293 inhabitants, in 1981 1,234 and in 1971 1,204 inhabitants.
