The Vienna-Umgebung district was an administrative district of the Province of Lower Austria . It was created in 1954 through the dissolution of Greater Vienna ; at the end of 2016 it was dissolved and divided among the neighboring districts. At the time of its dissolution, the Vienna-Umgebung district consisted of 21 communities , including six towns and seven market communities. Its license plate number was WU with the exception of the town of Schwechat ( SW ).

history

During the time of National Socialism in 1938 a number of independent communities were united with Vienna to form Greater Vienna . When Vienna was redimensioned to its present size in 1946 (decision) and 1954 (implementation), 80 affiliated municipalities became independent again and several of them were brought together in the new Lower Austrian district of Vienna.

The Vienna-Umgebung district consisted of three isolated areas: around Schwechat in the southeast and Gerasdorf as a much smaller area in the northeast and the Klosterneuburg - Purkersdorf area (north) west of Vienna .

The latter area was constricted between a region to the west of Vienna and a region to the north-west on the short border between the municipality of Mauerbach (north of Purkersdorf) and the municipality of Klosterneuburg (further north) to a width of about 700 m and had none Area connecting road on. Therefore, the district authority had its own offices in both parts of the area and the district as a whole was often incorrectly represented as consisting of four isolated areas.

On September 1, 1954, the new district administration Vienna-Umgebung began its activities in the former building of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce, Vienna 1., Löwelstrasse 20. In 1969 the district authority (BH) Wien-Umgebung moved to Vienna 9., Alserbachstrasse 41. With a resolution of the Lower Austrian provincial government of April 9, 1991, the headquarters of the BH Wien-Umgebung was moved to Klosterneuburg. On June 18, 1998, the new official building in Klosterneuburg, Leopoldstrasse 21, went into operation. Branch offices were located in Purkersdorf, Schwechat, Gerasdorf and in Vienna's Herrengasse .

In 1956, Gablitz , Mauerbach , Pressbaum , Tullnerbach and Wolfsgraben were removed from the Sankt Pölten-Land district and joined the Vienna-Umgebung district.
