history

In ancient times the area was part of the province of Pannonia . The first settlements in the area of today's Himberg came from the Teutons and Romans . The region gained importance through the Roman legionary camps Vindobona , Alanova and Carnuntum .

The name Himberg appears for the first time around 1100 in connection with the battle on the Lechfeld in 955 against the Hungarians, when the region went to the Babenberg margraves.

The community owes its name to a follower of the Babenbergs , namely Marquardus de Hintperg. Later the spelling changed from Hintberg to Himperch in Himberg . The Babenberg Duke Friedrich II. The arguable acquired Himberg in 1243, including the castle and all associated possessions.

From 1312–1315, Himberg was the scene of the Inquisition . On behalf of Passau Bishop Bernhard von Prambach , two Waldensians were burned at the stake here as part of a national heretic persecution .

Around 1320 Himberg was raised to an independent parish and in 1365 Himberg received market rights , which underlines its great importance in the Middle Ages .

The invasion of the Turks in the course of the siege of Vienna in 1529 and 1683 not only destroyed the castle, but also caused serious damage to the site. As compensation for the damage suffered in the Turkish Wars, King Ferdinand, who later became Emperor Ferdinand I , confirmed the freedom of the market for his subjects in Himberg with a decree of August 10, 1533 and also granted this place the toll privilege. After that there was a weekly market every Friday and an ox market in St. Laurence, as well as Hungarian (today Burgenland) wine and tolls collected throughout the year.

In 1749, the wealthy bourgeois class of Himberg bought themselves free from the sovereign property for the amount of 40,100  guilders . Himberg became a free market.

In the 19th century, different businesses began to settle in Himberg. The opening of the Vienna-Bruck Eastern Railway also supported the economic development of the area around Himberg.

The agricultural estate Gutenhof (around 1790 a Spanish sheep farm for a few decades ) was owned by the Velm rulership until 1833, after which Eduard Ritter von Troll († January 11, 1870 in Gutenhof; age: 69), from 1837 kk Truchsess , who from In 1869 negotiations were in progress with the municipality of Vienna to sell the property in order to use it as Vienna's central cemetery , and after the failure of the project (not least due to the amount and scope of his claims), he voluntarily retired.

In 1872, Gutenhof came into the possession of Franz von Hopfen (1825–1901), who left parts of it to the kk agriculture ministry for teaching purposes for ten years . As part of the Vienna World Exhibition in 1873, Gutenhof was an exhibition venue where agricultural products and test results were presented to the public (focus: steam plow , artificial fertilizer , water supply ). From 1896 the Mayr-Melnhof'sche Gutenhof was one of the first farms in Austria in which electricity (obtained from the cold corridor ) was largely made usable .

The very first Kaplan turbine was installed in Velm in 1919 for the Börtel and knitting yarn factory , which was in service here until 1955 and is now on display in the Technical Museum.

During the National Socialist rule, it was incorporated into Greater Vienna on October 15, 1938 , where Himberg remained as part of the 23rd district of Vienna until August 31, 1954. On September 1, 1954, Himberg, like most of the so-called former peripheral communities, regained full independence and at the same time was expanded to include the Gutenhof cadastral community.

On January 1, 1971, the municipality of Himberg and Velm was voluntarily amalgamated and on January 1, 1972, the Lower Austrian provincial government ordered the compulsory merger with the Pellendorf municipality.

From 1954 until its dissolution on January 1, 2017, Himberg was part of the Vienna-Umgebung district .

On September 7, 2019, the first LGBTIQ Pride in Lower Austria took place in Himberg . This came in response to an incident in which a same-sex couple was cursed on the street in Himberg.

Population development

According to the results of the 2001 census , there were 5423 inhabitants. In 1991 the market town had 5173 inhabitants, in 1981 4981 and in 1971 4614 inhabitants.
