Neighboring communities

In the west it borders on Hainburg an der Donau . The neighboring communities in the south and east are Hundsheim , Edelstal in Burgenland and Berg . The foothills of the Hainburg Mountains , which are also densely forested, extend on this side of the municipality . In the east, the municipality is bounded by the state border with Slovakia ( Petržalka , a district of Bratislava ), but the border crossing there is on the municipality of Berg . In the north of Wolfsthal, the Danube forms the border with two other parts of Bratislava: Devín and Karlova Ves . However, there are no border crossings there.

history

  • 1083 - Wolfsthal is first mentioned in the chronicle of Göttweig, Wolfsthal becomes a daughter parish of Hainburg. Whether the place name comes from a person "wolf" or from an animal is not completely clear; a derivation from the animal name is considered likely, as old area names such as "Wolfsrüssel" or "Wolfsbruck" suggest.
  • 1400 - A Jewish settlement is established in Wolfsthal. A temple from this time is still preserved in the former forester's house on Oberen Gasse.
  • 1529 - The first Turkish attack brings destruction and hardship over Wolfsthal and the Pottenburg.
  • 1544 - Otto Wilhelm zu Walterskirchen and Hundsheim acquires the Veste Wolfsthal and the Pottenburg as his own. Both are still owned by the Walterskirchen family today.
  • 1660 - The old, originally probably Romanesque church is expanded, the dome and choir are built.
  • 1683 - The plague and the second Turkish onslaught bring ruin and destruction to Wolfsthal again.
  • 1710 - The Wolfsthaler church becomes a pilgrimage church, the two aisles are added, the cemetery originally arranged around the church is relocated outside of the village.
  • 1742 - A school is built in front of the current church.
  • 1805 - The French invasion of Wolfsthal brings hardship and destruction again.
  • 1911 - Construction of the Preßburgerbahn , since 1955 the line has ended in Wolfsthal.
  • 1928 - Wolfsthal is electrified.
  • 1972 Wolfsthal was merged with the neighboring municipality of Berg. In 1997 both communities became independent again.
  • On September 19, 2007, Mayor Gerhard Schödinger received the Centrope Prize, which was awarded for the first time, for his support for the integration of residents of Slovak origin .

Population development

According to the results of the 2001 census, there were 750 inhabitants. In 1991 the community had 711 inhabitants, in 1981 723 inhabitants and in 1971 795 inhabitants.

With the Schengen Agreement on December 21, 2007, border controls at the Slovakian border ceased to exist, and the municipality experienced a new upswing in population. In 2005 the community had 720 inhabitants. On January 1st, 2020 there were already 1146 inhabitants. The Slovaks' interest in settling in Wolfsthal was favored by the proximity to the Slovak capital Bratislava and by cheap building sites in Wolfsthal.
