history
A legend from the 14th century tells about the origin of the place name: Playing children discovered a statue of the Virgin Mary on the banks of the Danube, which seemed to be swimming against the current. The place was named "Maria Anlandt", from which "Maria Alland" and finally "Maria Ellend" developed over time.
In ancient times the area was part of the Roman province of Pannonia . The first documentary mention is around 1080 under the name "Haselawa", from the 12th to 14th centuries the place was determined by the knight family von Haslau and thus also the location of a castle. During this time the place is a fief of Orth an der Donau , or Petronell . After the Turkish Wars in 1529 and 1683, the place was heavily depopulated and was subsequently settled by Croats , which is why the place name Croatian Haslau was commonly used.
In the 18th century there was a landslide in which the northern line of the former street village fell.
The pilgrimage church was built in 1770–1772 by Franz Josef Gabriel von Abensperg and Traun and the place has been called Maria Ellend ever since. 1906–1914 the pilgrimage complex and Lourdes grotto are built opposite the pilgrimage church. The opening of the railway station in the same year ensured an increase in the number of pilgrims. In 1929 the parish Maria Ellend is taken over by the missionaries of the Holy Family.
After the collapse of the Danube monarchy in 1918, the population sought the original place name Haslau.
During the Second World War, Haslau / Maria Ellend was the victim of some bomb attacks and in 1945 it was occupied by the Red Army.
In 1969 the two places were finally merged into one municipality.
