Orth an der Donau (until September 12, 1959 only Orth ) is a market town with 2157 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Gänserndorf district in the Austrian state of Lower Austria .
geography
Orth an der Donau is located in Marchfeld in Lower Austria in the center of the Donau-Auen National Park . The area of the market town covers 33.41 square kilometers. 31.02 percent of the area is forested.

Population development
According to the results of the 2001 census, there were 1966 inhabitants. In 1991 the market town had 1773 inhabitants, 1981: 1624 and in 1971: 1522 inhabitants.
history
In the Oberau settler coup in 1926, unemployed people from Vienna occupied the Au between Orth and Mannsdorf an der Donau .

- Since 1981 there has been a partnership with the city of Fehmarn (Petersdorf School, Port Orth) on the German Baltic Sea island of Fehmarn.

Culture and sights
- Orth Castle : A mighty three-storey, three-wing complex with four dominating corner towers. The west wing dates from the 12th century. After severe damage from the First Austrian Turkish War in 1529, the facility was rebuilt in 1550 while retaining the layout and the existing facility type.
- Donau-Auen National Park : Since 1996 the castle has served as the seat and visitor center of the Donau-Auen National Park.

- Catholic parish church Orth an der Donau hl. Michael: A former fortified church. After severe damage from the First Austrian Turkish War in 1529, the medieval church was rebuilt and redesigned in Baroque style in 1689 while retaining the late Gothic core structure .

- Ship mill Orth an der Donau : Of the original up to 60 ship mills that were in operation along the Danube below the city of Vienna, one functioning ship mill has been preserved. After the mill sank, it was raised and repaired again in 2008.

economy
In 2001 there were 93 non-agricultural workplaces, and according to the 1999 survey there were 52 in agriculture and forestry. According to the 2001 census, the number of people in employment at home was 912. In 2001, the employment rate was 47.6 percent.

- Shire Austria : The laboratories and production facilities of Shire Austria are an important economic factor. In 1997, what was then Baxter Austria took over Immuno AG. Along with Vienna, Orth is one of the largest locations in Europe.

- Danube ferry Orth – Haslau-Maria Ellend: From Orth a ferry crosses the Danube to Haslau-Maria Ellend . It is only available to pedestrians and cyclists and is only open in the summer season. It has a connection to the Haslau-Maria Ellend express train station. The ferry for the cycle path on Hubertusdamm or the cycle route to the northern Weinviertel is popular.
- Bus: Orth an der Donau was the south-western end point of a branch of the Siebenbrunn – Engelhartstetten local railway , on which passenger traffic was stopped as early as 1936. Since then, Orth / Donau can only be reached by bus.
