Groß-Schweinbarth is located in the hill country of the Weinviertel between Bad Pirawarth and Gänserndorf in Lower Austria. The area of ​​the market town covers 24.92 square kilometers. 46.3 percent of the area is forested.

The market town of Groß-Schweinbarth is located in the gently rolling hills of the Weinviertel, in the Weidenbachtal. From the wooded heights the view extends south into the Marchfeld and as far as Vienna, which is 25 km away. Groß-Schweinbarth, with its 1300 inhabitants and a total area of ​​2500 hectares, is a typical, independent municipality for the Weinviertel. There are 20 families who do their main or part-time viticulture here and they cultivate a total of 280 hectares of vineyards.

The first documentary mention was in the year 1120. In that year Wernhart the Swynwarther and his wife Sigela donated a vineyard to Swynwarth, to the monastery Klosterneuburg. The Swynwarther knightly family also gave the place its name, which in the course of time changed to Groß-Schweinbarth. In the eventful history of the place, Counts Abensperg and Traun came in 1648 and intensified viticulture. Ernst von Abensperg and Traun, Hereditary Marshal of Austria, also supplied the Imperial Court of Vienna with Groß-Schweinbarther wine.

Population development

According to the results of the 2001 census , there were 1,290 inhabitants. In 1991 the market town had 1,017 inhabitants, in 1981, 1982 and in 1971 1,039 inhabitants.
