The local railway Gänserndorf – Mistelbach (today also called Weinviertel-Landesbahn ) is a single-track, non-electrified branch line operated by the ÖBB in the Weinviertel in Lower Austria . The route originally connected the two district capitals of Gänserndorf and Mistelbach , lastly the Gänserndorf – Bad Pirawarth section was served.

history

A class 5047 train at Gaweinstal-Brünner Strasse station (1991)

The railway line from Gänserndorf to Gaunersdorf (today Gaweinstal) was built by the local railway Gänserndorf – Gaunersdorf Gesellschaft and opened on September 13, 1903. According to an application submitted to the Lower Austrian state parliament in 1903 , the extension of the line to the Mistelbacher local train station was put into operation on the 15th of the month following a technical and police inspection on November 12, 1906. In February 1914, the Lower Austrian State Railways took over operations.

On January 1, 1921, all of the NÖLB routes were taken over by the Austrian Federal Railways . The local railway Gänserndorf – Mistelbach was taken over by the Austrian Federal Railways on September 24, 1924. On July 1, 1935, the license for the local railway from Mistelbach to Gaunersdorf (Gaweinstal) expired , and the same day ownership of the licensed local railway line went to the federal government over , and the operational management was from then on the economic body "Austrian Federal Railways" .

On May 28, 1988 the route Gaweinstal Brünner Straße – Mistelbach was discontinued, in 2004 passenger traffic in the section Gaweinstal Brünner Straße – Bad Pirawarth .

Since 2004, the Gänserndorf – Mistelbach line, together with the section of the Stammersdorfer local railway from Obersdorf to Groß Schweinbarth , has been referred to as the Weinviertel-Landesbahn . The trains of the 5047 series commuted between Gänserndorf and Groß-Schweinbarth every hour. The section Groß Schweinbarth – Bad Pirawarth was last only served by trains from Obersdorf. The Bad Pirawarth – Gaweinstal Brünner Straße section was discontinued in 2004. The short section between Mistelbach Lokalbahnhof and Paasdorf Rübenplatz is still operated during the beet season, as there is a large beet loading area there. The Gaweinstal – Paasdorf Rübenplatz section has largely been preserved, but some of the tracks are heavily overgrown or have been removed in sections (e.g. in the area of road crossings). The former final station Mistelbach Lokalbahn is still connected to the railway network via the Korneuburg – Hohenau local railway or a connecting track to the Laaer Ostbahn and is used for freight traffic.

Railway operations today

With the timetable change on December 15, 2019, passenger traffic on the route was discontinued due to insufficient utilization. Alternatively, the new bus lines 530 and 535 have been operating since September 2, 2019.

In the 2020 timetable year, two more service trips are planned, namely:

  • BED 74246 Gae 21:19 - AB (Awanst) km 1.0 21: 26/36 - Gae 21:43
  • BED 74244 Gae 21:14 - Prottes (Awanst, AB) 21: 27/37 - Gae 21:49

Sample timetables exist for the rest of the route.
