The Gänserndorf – Marchegg railway line (sometimes referred to colloquially as the Marchfelderbahn ) is a branch of the Northern Railway in Lower Austria . It leads from Gänserndorf to Marchegg and connects the Northern Railway with the Marchegger Eastern Railway or further across the border to Bratislava .

The line is single-track and not electrified. Diesel railcars of the ÖBB 5047 series commute between Gänserndorf and Marchegg every hour. Every two hours on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays.

On January 10, 2012, the route was declared a high-performance route. In accordance with the edict of February 14, 2012, ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG applied to the BMVIT for a building permit under railway law for the electrification of the area between Gänserndorf station - Marchegg station - state border at Marchegg. The on December 12, 2012 under the GZ. BMVIT- 820.333 / 0005-IV / SCH2 / 2012, however, was approved with the EIA approval of the expansion and electrification of the Stadlau – Marchegg high-speed line (decision of the Ministry of Transport of August 22, 2014, GZ. BMVIT-820.341 / 0011-IV / SCH2 / 2014) repealed.

According to the framework plan of ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG for the years 2017 to 2022, the electrification was planned by 2023 together with the expansion and electrification of the Stadlau - Marchegg railway line. Due to delays in railway projects throughout Austria, which were announced in 2018, expansion and electrification should already be completed by 2020, as the previously unelectrified Slovak section of the Marchegger Eastern Railway State Border – Devínska Nová Ves should also be completed in 2020 instead of 2023.

From the timetable year 2021, the route is to be integrated into the Viennese rapid transit system . The trains of the S1 line, which until then have ended in Gänserndorf , will be connected every hour to Marchegg with the electrification of the route from December 2020. The route is to be closed from July until the timetable change in December 2020.
