All railway lines of the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) are recorded in a so-called "VzG" (list of locally permitted speeds and special features), which is the basis for all operational documents. If the VzG was previously managed manually, it has been electronically recorded and evaluated for several years ("e-VzG"). This makes editing more efficient and changes can be made more quickly. Above all, the data from the e-VzG can be transferred directly to other systems (e.g. for creating timetables).

 1)  2) The prefix numbers resulted from the conversion of the previous system to the EDP system. In the past, each of the four Federal Railway Directorates (Vienna, Linz, Innsbruck and Villach) had separate, two-digit route numbers from 01 to 99, whereby the starting point of a route was decisive for the management area.

As a result of the changeover to EDP systems, prefix numbers from 1 to 4 were assigned to the directorates, which were placed in front of the actual route number:

  • 1 = Vienna
  • 2 = Linz
  • 3 = Innsbruck
  • 4 = Villach

 3) The last two digits (from 01 to 09) indicate a subsection of the respective route for long journeys.

 4) The changeover to the EDP system also made it necessary to provide loop tracks and wing routes with their own route numbers. The numbers from 11 to 99 are provided for these tracks.

Route length

The route length of the Austrian Federal Railways covers a total of 5,639.058 kilometers. Of these, 3,686.523 km (65.37  % ) are single-track and 1,952.535 km (34.63%) are double-track. The ÖBB does not have any lines that have more than two tracks. Three- and four-track sections are either treated as two lines (for example, lines 101 02 and 130 01 of the "four-track" Westbahn) or as station tracks (for example, the three-track section Wörgl Hbf - Wörgl Kundl).

Gauges

The proportion of standard-gauge lines is 5,335.548 km (94.49%) and that of narrow-gauge lines is 311.211 km (5.51%); all with a track width of 760 mm. After the sale of the 5.853 km long Schafbergbahn (former route number 273 01) to Salzburg AG , ÖBB are only the owners of the 9.805 km long rack railway to the Hochschneeberg (route number 198 01), which is operated by Niederösterreichische Schneebergbahn GmbH (NÖSBB) . The strategic goal of the ÖBB is to outsource all narrow-gauge lines from the stock of the ÖBB. In addition, operation on other branch lines is at risk and is the subject of negotiations with the Ministry of Transport as the owner's representative.

Single and double track lines

What is noticeable in the ÖBB route network are the many mixed double and single-track routes, which are on the one hand due to the dismantling of former double-track routes - such as the Franz Josefs-Bahn (route number 109 01) or the Südbahn (route number 105 01) - and on the other hand through expansion measures - like the Arlbergbahn (route number 101 05) or the Tauernbahn (route number 222 01).

Operational infrastructure of the routes

Electrical operation

Of the 5,639.058 kilometers of route, 3,596.849 km (63.78%) are operated electrically. The first electrically operated standard gauge line in what is now Austria was the Mittenwald Railway, which opened on October 28, 1912 . The first electrically operated narrow-gauge railway was the Mariazellerbahn , which was continuously passable on July 15, 1907 (route number 153 01) and was continuously electrically passable from October 7, 1911. Track change operation

As a result of the modernization of safety systems , which has been massively advanced in recent years, all double-track lines (except for the Lochau-Hörbranz-Lindau border line) are now equipped with track changing operations, which can be used freely due to the operating regulation "DV V 3" applicable at the ÖBB and thus not only in the case of track closures, but also in normal operation the permeability is significantly increased. In individual cases, the use of the opposite track is also ordered in the timetable for reasons of capacity. Even in the case of signal disturbances, the track changing mode can be used.

DV V 3 explains : “ In the case of track changing operations, mainline tracks can be used in both directions according to signals [...] In principle, trains use the regular track. With the consent of the two dispatchers, the opposite track may be used [...] If the main signals are unsuitable, the optional use of the track remains permissible. "

Punctual train control

The " punctual train control " (PZB), formerly called "INDUSI" ( inductive train control ), is a train control system with which information to secure the train journey is transmitted. Track magnets are used to monitor the position of the signals as well as excess speed at certain points (for example in the event of speed breaks or slow driving). The "PZB 90" system is used by the Austrian Federal Railways.

The “Additional provisions for the signaling and operating regulations” (ZSB) of the Austrian Federal Railways explain: “ The PZB monitors the observance of pre-signals, main signals including signal imitators with yellow light points, protection signals and certain speed restrictions. ““ Only traction vehicles / multiple units with suitable PZB equipment are allowed to run on PZB routes […] Exceptions […] can be approved by the infrastructure manager. "

At ÖBB, all lines of the core network and the supplementary network are equipped with point-based train control. Routes or route sections without a PZB are listed in the following tables.

Train control

The Austrian Federal Railways operate a total of 24 routes with a total length of 1,002.017 km in train control.

Formerly, the operation on train control routes was regulated by the service regulation "DV V 5 (train control)", in which deviations from the service regulations "DV V 2 (signal regulation)" and "DV V 3 (signal regulation)" as well as the service aid "DB 639 (timetable aids ) ”Were included.
