Türnitz is a market town with 1913 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Lilienfeld district in Lower Austria .

geography

Türnitz is located in the Mostviertel in the south-western part of the Traisental , which is traversed by the Türnitzer Traisen , more precisely the two source rivers Türnitz and Traisenbach unite to the Türnitzer Traisen.

The area of ​​the market town covers 145.53 square kilometers, of which 85.01 percent is forested. This represents one of the highest proportions of forest in Austria. In terms of area, Türnitz is the fourth largest municipality in Lower Austria. The altitude of the community is between 400 m (outside Fahrafeld) and the summit corridors of the surrounding mountains, which reach up to 1400  m : Türnitzer Höger , Eibl and Tirolerkogel in the southwest of the valley, as well as Eisenstein and Hohenstein in the north.

Other districts are Am Berg, Anthof-Siedlung, Anthöfe, Dickenau, Freiland, Gstettenhof, Hauserbauerngraben, Hochgraser, Im Reit, Karnerhöfe, Moosbach, Rempel, Schildböck, Seelenhöfe, Strobelhöfe, Wechsel and numerous individual locations.

history

In ancient times, the area was part of the Noricum province .

The name Türnitz is of Slavic origin and means "remote place". It comes from the early 9th century, when Slavic farmers settled in the area of ​​the Türnitz Traisen , who followed them westward as subjects of the Magyars . The Magyars devastated and later depopulated the areas of Lower Austria several times until they were finally defeated in the Battle of Lechfeld in 955 .

In 1209 the first documentary mention was made as "Durnitze". In 1371 the place was called the market.

Population development

According to the results of the 2001 census, there were 2050 inhabitants. In 1991 the market town had 2,170 inhabitants, in 1981 2,171 and in 1971 2309 inhabitants.

  • Road: Mariazeller Straße runs through the Türnitz Traisental - coming from St. Pölten and Lilienfeld - which rises to 976 m at the head of the valley to the Annaberg Pass . Personalities

  • Cimburgis of Mazovia (* 1394 or 1397 in Warsaw, Duchy of Mazovia; † September 28, 1429 in Türnitz, Lower Austria) was a Polish princess from the Piast dynasty and daughter of Duke Siemowit of Mazovia and his wife Alexandra of Lithuania. Cimburgis was duchess of Austria through marriage to Ernst the Iron from the Styrian-Inner-Austrian line. Her mother Alexandra was the sister of the Polish king Władysław II Jagiełło and maternal granddaughter of the Grand Duke of Vladimir, Alexander Mikhailovich. She is the mother of Emperor Friedrich III. and as such the ancestor of all later Habsburgs, as this line outlived all others.
  • Franz Ignatius Petuelli (* 1750–?), Market judge in Türnitz, reported on the French invasions in 1805 and 1809 in the market book, he was close friends with Ladislaus Pyrker.
