history
In ancient times, the area was part of the Noricum province .
The area around Annaberg came in 1202 through a gift from Leopold VI. to the Cistercian Abbey of Lilienfeld . Abbot Gerhard began to reclaim the 976 m high saddle as early as 1207 . Ten years later there was a permanent settlement and a chapel that was consecrated to St. Anna . In 1327 this was expanded due to the numerous visits of pilgrims. Annaberg was raised to a parish in 1380.
In the Thirty Years' War in 1639 the whole village was destroyed by fire and rebuilt with the help of donations from Emperor Ferdinand II and his wife Eleonora Gonzaga . Especially in the 18th century there was also brisk mining activity, such as the silver mine in the village of Schmelz. Further yet lead , gypsum and coal mined. A popular activity in the area around Annaberg was the Ameisln , which was operated by the Bandion family until the 21st century.
The opening of the Mariazellerbahn in 1907 finally brought the age of tourism.
In September 2013, the Annaberg multiple murder occurred in the community .
Religions
About two thirds of the population is Roman Catholic ( Parish Annaberg ), about one third is a member of the Evangelical Church AB (as part of the Evangelical Parish Mitterbach ).
