In the Thirty Years' War in 1639 the whole village was destroyed by fire and rebuilt with the help of donations from Emperor Ferdinand II and his wife Eleonora Gonzaga . Especially in the 18th century there was also brisk mining activity, such as the silver mine in the village of Schmelz. Further yet lead , gypsum and coal mined. A popular activity in the area around Annaberg was the Ameisln , which was operated by the Bandion family until the 21st century.

The opening of the Mariazellerbahn in 1907 finally brought the age of tourism.
