Eschenau is a municipality with 1293 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Lilienfeld district in Lower Austria .

geography

Eschenau is located in the Mostviertel in Lower Austria in a side valley of the Traisen about 20 km south of St. Pölten . The area of ​​the community, a church and scattered settlement, covers 24.71 square kilometers. 49.68 percent of the area is forested. The highest mountain is the Lindenberg at 946 m, followed by the Lorenzipechkogel at 883 m. A popular destination is the Kaiserkogel with the Kaiserkogelhütte at 716 m above sea level.

history

In ancient times, the area was part of the Noricum province .

In 1230 the place was mentioned in a document as "Eschenowe" owned by the Lilienfeld Abbey. At that time the parish was incorporated by the monastery . In the 13th century , the Altenburg , the ancestral seat of the ministerial family of the Altenburgs , was located near the suburb of Rotheau . Eschenau has been an independent parish since 1786.

According to the results of the 2001 census , there were 1162 inhabitants. In 1991 the community had 1016 inhabitants, in 1981 1024 and in 1971 1020 inhabitants.
