Kirchberg an der Pielach is a market town with 3207 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Sankt Pölten-Land district in Lower Austria .

geography

Kirchberg an der Pielach is located in the Pielach valley in the Mostviertel in the Lower Austrian Alps . The area of ​​the market town covers 63.52 square kilometers. 54.54 percent of the area is forested.

history

In ancient times, the area was part of the Noricum province .

In the 6th to 9th centuries there was probably an Avar settlement in the local area , followed by Slavic residents. The castle in Kirchberg was built in the 11th century. The first mention of the place followed around 1250 as "Chirichperg". 1608 Kirchberg is mentioned as a market place. In 1848 there was a revolution and the liberation of the peasants, in 1850 a community council was formed. With the connection of Austria in 1938 the place to Lower Danube came. On May 8, 1945, Soviet troops moved in, followed by democratic elections in November 1945 and the restoration of Austrian sovereignty.

Population development

In the first and last decades of the 20th century there was a strong increase in population. In the past 25 years, the positive birth balance has been offset by a negative migration balance.

Sports

The Kirchberg sports club was founded on October 26, 1946.

The former karate world champion Karina Gansch comes from Kirchberg an der Pielach. She became Austria's first female Shōtōkan world champion in Bern in 1998 .

Economy and Infrastructure

The number of non-agricultural workplaces increased from 136 in 2001 to 179 in 2011. There were 156 agricultural and forestry holdings according to the 1999 survey. This number fell to 146 in 2010. According to the 2001 census, the number of people in employment was on Residence 1,387. The employment rate in 2016 was 52.8 percent.

Kirchberg is on the Mariazellerbahn . This railway line stops in the municipality in the Kirchberg an der Pielach station, as well as the Tradigist and Schwerbach stops. Kirchberg was a system crossing station between June 1991 and December 2015 with a two-year interruption.

Kirchberg is connected to the higher-ranking road network by the B39 ( Pielachtal Straße ).
