history

In ancient times, the area was part of the Noricum province . Around 450 the Hunnenhügel was built, an earth wall on which there was probably a fortification. More recent finds show settlement and trade in the Celtic and Roman times. In 1130, “Chirichstetten” was first mentioned in a document as an independent parish. In 1374 the parish of Totzenbach split off from Kirchstetten. In 1512 the Protestant "Priestly Society of All Saints above the Vienna Woods" was founded in Totzenbach. In 1529 Kirchstetten Castle was destroyed by the Turks. In 1622 Kirchstetten came to the parish of Ollersbach. In 1634 Totzenbach became Catholic again and the parish was rebuilt by Emperor Joseph II. In 1848 the landlord was abolished and the farmers became landowners.

The train station was built in 1857 and the post office was set up in 1862. In 1876, a school building was built in Kirchstetten on the former Schloßberg, which later became the Joseph Weinheber elementary school. In 1898 a school building was built in Totzenbach, the Kaiser Franz Joseph Jubilee Elementary School. In 1939 the construction of the western motorway began.

At the end of World War II, Kirchstetten was a frontline area for some time, where Wehrmacht soldiers fought against Soviet troops. Especially in Aschberg, in the Kirchenwald, in Hinterholz near the Warthof zur Wolfsähn, the fighting was heavy and with great sacrifices. Traces of it can still be found today. The Westbahn was also bombed again and again, especially during the bombing of St. Pölten, bombs fell on Kirchstetten. The church also took a hit, but the bomb did not explode.

In 1988 Johann Kastenberger, alias Pumpgun Ronnie, attacked what was then the Volksbank branch. In the same year, after his spectacular escape, he hid in Kirchstetten and stole the car of the then vice-mayor in Waasen. He was shot in this car after breaking a roadblock on the A1, and he judged himself accordingly, also in the car. At that time Kirchstetten was occupied by special units of the gendarmerie and police and there was great uncertainty among the population.

Around 1850 the communities of Kirchstetten and Totzenbach came into being, which were combined to form the Kirchstetten community in 1971. In 1999 Kirchstetten was given back the market rights that it had had from the 14th century until the first Turkish war.
