content

Linda, the daughter of Baron von Danning, is supposed to marry the wealthy Walter Bertram because her father's property is in debt. She likes Walter, but has loved Markus, the son of the organ builder Franz Burgmann, since her youth . However, he attended the seminary in St. Marien and is now returning to Lensberg for a short time after three years. Linda is plunged into an emotional crisis because, in addition to her lack of love for Walter, she also fears that the villagers will assume that she will marry Walter just for the money. Walter's father advocates a quick engagement of the couple, who have only known each other for six months, and Baron Petra Wührer's new girlfriend also welcomes a quick engagement.

Linda confesses her love to Markus and Markus is also taken with his childhood love. He gets into a crisis of faith and considers resigning from the priesthood. When Walter's father wants to schedule a wedding between Lindas and Walter in six weeks, Linda announces that she only wants to get married when the organ in Lensberg is working again. Markus is entrusted with the repair of the instrument, which has been inactive for many years, but he repeatedly delays the completion. Linda does not want to marry Walter, because he only lives through the day with his large amount of money, does not work and does not make any effort to do something on his own and to give his life meaning.

The baron's money worries, which are the cause of the marriage aspirations, are mainly due to the embezzlement of funds by the estate manager Marek. He ruthlessly urges his workers to cut the baron's wood in the forest and even accepts deaths in the process. However, he only gives the baron a fraction of the proceeds from the sale of the wood. Petra Wührer knows how to use Marek's cunning for herself and extorts from him a portion of the money that she keeps herself. Over time, the Baron and Walter realize that Marek cannot be trusted. Walter is appointed the new estate manager and wants to have the books checked first. He is knocked down by Marek and only saved from greater damage by Markus' intervention. Marek flees and sets fire to the stable of the property in which he has locked Linda. She is saved by Walter. Marek is arrested and Walter receives the extorted money back from Petra, which belongs to the baron. This ends his relationship with Petra.

Franz, in turn, finishes restoring the organ when he notices Markus' inner conflict. In prayer, Markus finds God again and decides against Linda, who has now recognized that Walter is striving to change and has taken on responsibility. Both marry in church; Markus plays on the restored organ for the wedding ceremony.

The conflict between the twin brothers Franz and Josef Burgmann, the latter in the service of the baron, which is set in a subplot, is finally settled by the resolute cook Therese.

Production, publication

It is a production by Schönbrunn-Film Ernest Müller. The shooting for Der Organbauer von St. Marien took place from May 5, 1961 to June 1961 in the Wachau , in Kirchstetten (St. Pölten Land district) and in the Vienna Rosenhügel film studios .

In the film, both the Hellberg duo and Franzl Lang appear with their own titles. Franzl Lang plays the role of the organ builder assistant Leopold in the film, but he prefers to sing rather than work. The Hellberg duo appears as a singing duo in two scenes, but is only indirectly involved in the film plot.

The Hellberg duo sings the songs Today is a day, just for the two of us and goodbye to my homeland . Franzl Lang appears with Weil we are from Hinterblixen and the Königsjodler . The film also contains the title Die alten Donauschiffer .

The film premiered on July 28, 1961 in the Bavaria in Würzburg . It was also published in France.

criticism

The lexicon of international films described Der Orgelbauer von St. Marien in the version printed in 1990 as a "belated Austrian homeland film - a good celibacy snitch ". In the online version, the film is called "Heimatfilm-Schnulze full of factual contradictions and dramaturgical improbabilities".

On the side of the BR there was talk of a “dramatic home film about love, faith and calling”, in which “Sieghardt Rupp, the 'tough' man of German post-war film”, in this “colorful and cozy film” in one "Rather unfamiliar role as a monk" can be seen.
