St. Marien (also Sankt Marien ) is a municipality in Upper Austria , Linz-Land district with 4828 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) and with 37.6 km² the second largest municipality in the district in terms of area. The responsible judicial district is the judicial district of Traun . The economy in the municipality is heavily geared towards agriculture, with the service sector and the secondary sector (production, construction) also playing a role. However, the high number of out-commuters among the working population is decisive for St. Marien.

geography

St. Marien is 338  m above sea level. A. Altitude in the Upper Austrian central area or in the Traun-Enns-Riedelland spatial unit . The extension is 9 km from north to south, 8 km from west to east. The total area was 37.6 km², making St. Marien the second largest municipality in the Linz-Land district. The municipality falls mainly from south to north and has altitudes between 370 and 280 meters above sea level. In 2001, 80 percent of the municipal area was used for agricultural purposes, 11 percent accounted for forest, 5 percent for gardens, 0.8 percent for building land and 0.5 percent for water. Other areas made up three percent of the community area. The municipality borders in the north on the city of Ansfelden , in the east on St. Florian , Niederneukirchen and Hofkirchen im Traunkreis , in the south on Wolfern and Schiedlberg (both districts of Steyr-Land ) and in the west on Piberbach and Neuhofen an der Krems .

Geology and vegetation

The surface of the parish of St. Marien was formed in the Tertiary and Quaternary periods. In the underground, there is a Schlierschicht which is overlain by gravel cover and above of Decklehm. While the cover clay is the starting material for soil formation in the municipality, the cover gravel only emerges in erosion areas. In general, the soils are lime-free to lime-free, react acidic and are hardly at risk of erosion. On the slopes there is well-supplied pseudovergleyte, lime-free loose sediment - brown earth , which, due to its high water storage capacity, represents high-quality arable land and high-quality grassland. In the flat areas there is predominantly pseudogley with alternating moisture , which can be used as medium-quality arable land and high-quality grassland. In erosion layers, the gravel surface mainly formed colored local soils, which, due to their moderate storage capacity and high permeability, represent moderate to low-quality arable land and medium-quality grassland. While the fertile soils are usually used intensively for agriculture, there are hardly any extensively used green areas. The forest areas along the rivers and on the plateaus are mostly used for forestry. These are mixed deciduous forests or pure coniferous forests. In the municipal area, the intensive, agricultural use has hardly preserved any areas that are valuable in terms of nature conservation. Only structurally rich riparian trees and orchards take on the function of stepping stone biotopes. Spatially, the municipality on the so-called Traun-Enns-Platte can be divided into several sub-areas with its hilly landscape and small height differences. In the west is the almost flat Kremstal. It is joined to the east by a landscape of hills and valleys, which is divided into two parts by a kind of high plateau. The clearly reliefed moraine hill country is cut through by streams that have cut into the hilly landscape from south to north. The high plateau in between is almost flat.

Waters

In the west, the Krems forms the municipal boundary to Neuhofen an der Krems and Ansfelden . The Sailerbach, which has its source in the community of Schiedlberg and runs through St. Michael, Freiling and Pachersdorf, runs east of the Krems before it flows into the Krems. The Astenbach also rises in Schiedlberg, then runs east past St. Marien and joins the St. Marienbach at Stein. This rises southeast of St. Marien and forms the municipality boundary to Niederneukirchen, before it flows into the Ipfbach outside the municipality . The Ipfbach also rises in the community of Schiedlberg. After passing the Weichstetten settlement, it forms the eastern boundary of Hofkirchen im Traunkreis and Niederneukirchen. Some of the streams are cut into the terrain from south to north. The brooks themselves are often overprinted and fixed, but often pendulum or meandering close to nature and usually have broad accompanying trees that are closed on both sides. Standing bodies of water such as fish ponds, extinguishing water ponds and garden ponds are rare.

A total of 170 foreigners were counted in the municipality in 2013, 93 percent of whom came from Europe. The largest contingent at 54 percent was made up of people from EU countries. 18 percent had citizenship from the former Yugoslavia (excluding Slovenia). Turkish citizens comprised 21 percent. In 2001, 83.2 percent of the population committed to the Roman Catholic Church (Upper Austria: 79.4 percent), 4.0 percent were Protestant, 9.0 percent had no denomination and 2.4 percent were of Islamic faith.

The average age of the community population in 2001 was slightly below the national average. 20.8 percent of the residents of St. Marien were younger than 15 years (Upper Austria: 18.8 percent), 65.1 percent between 15 and 59 years old (Upper Austria: 61.6 percent). The proportion of residents over 59 years of age was 14.1 percent, below the national average of 20.2 percent. The average age of the population of St. Marien changed as a result in all segments. Population development

The community of Sankt Marien recorded practically no population growth between the late 19th century and 1939. Rather, the population fluctuated between around 2,200 and 2,500. After 1939 the population grew almost continuously. Only in the 1950s was there a short-term decline. From the 1980s onwards, population growth increased massively, so that the number of inhabitants almost doubled between 1961 and 2013. The population development of the municipality between the end of the 19th century and the year 1971 was significantly below average compared with the state of Upper Austria, but especially with the district of Linz-Land. Only then did the community grow faster than the Upper Austrian average and similar to the district average. The growth of the community since 1971 is due to a strongly positive birth balance and an ever increasing immigration. While immigration was almost the same as the birth surplus in the 1970s, immigration was more than twice as high as the birth surplus. This trend continued after 2002, although the growth rates were no longer as high.
