history

In 1887 a first settlement was founded here under the name Mooreville by the steamship captain William Moore . The gold prospectors arriving by ship in 1897 renamed them “Skagway” based on the place name in the Tlingit language , which was schaguè (“home of the north wind”). The borough was formed on June 20, 2007. The settlement grew and became the supply center for the gold diggers and all related trades. The legend of Soapy Smith is still alive in town.
