Port Lions is a town of 256 people on Kodiak Island in Kodiak Island Borough in the state of Alaska in the United States of America . The place was named in honor of the Lions Club , with whose and state help the village was built to accommodate the residents of Ag'waneq after the Good Friday Earthquake , an earthquake in 1964 on the neighboring island of Afognak . The Stanford University maintains a scientific radio station in Port Lions.
A federally recognized Native American tribe , Native Village of Port Lions is based in Port Lion and over 300 registered local members are advised and organized by the Port Lions Traditional Tribal Council .
geography
The place is in Settlers Cove near the mouth of Kizhuyak Bay , a bay on the north side of Kodiak Island. There are no roads connecting the settlement to other places; It can only be reached by air or sea. The port of Port Lions is one of the ports of the Alaska Marine Highway , according to the United States Census Bureau , the community area covers an area of 26.1 square kilometers; 9.6 square kilometers of this are water bodies.
Demographic data
According to the 2000 census, 256 people in 89 households and 76 families lived here. The population density is 16 people per square kilometer. Ethnically, the population is composed of 34.77% white, 63.28% Native American people , 1.95% come from two or more races. 1.95% of the population is Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 89 households out of which 44.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 74.2% of them were married couples living together, 7.9% were single mothers and 14.6% were non-families. 13.5% consisted of single households and 4.5% had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.88 and the average family size was 3.11.
33.2% of the population were under 18 years old. 3.9% between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.7% between 25 and 44 years old, 26.2% between 45 and 64 years, and 7% were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 113.3 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 106 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 39,107, and the median income for a family is $ 42,656. Males had a median income of $ 41,250 versus $ 30,625 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,492. 12.1% of the population and 12.7% of families are below the poverty line. 15% of them are children and young people under 18 years of age and 10.7% are 65 years of age or older.
