Tenakee Springs is a town of 93 people on Chichagof Island in the Hoonah-Angoon Census Area in the state of Alaska in the United States of America . The name comes from the Tlingit language and means “Bay of the Copper Shields ” ( tinaghu ), three highly valued shields of the Tlingit that were lost there in a storm. Originally known as "Tenakee", the site was renamed Tenakee Springs in 1928 because of its hot springs. Today the place is mainly used as a summer residence and recreation area.
geography
The place is in Tenakee Inlet across from Kadashan Bay on the east side of Chichagof Island. There are no roads connecting the settlement with other places, it can only be reached by air or sea. The port of Tenakee Springs is one of the ports of the Alaska Marine Highway , according to the United States Census Bureau , the municipality covers an area of 49.5 km², of which 13.8 km² is water.
Demographics
According to the 2000 census, 104 people lived here in 59 households and 28 families. The population density is 2.9 inhabitants per km². Racially, the population is composed of 87.5% white people, 2.88% Native Americans , 0.96% are Asian , 0.96% are from Pacific islanders, 1.92% are from other races and 5 , 77% are descended from two or more races. 2.88% of the population is Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 59 households, 16.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39% of whom were married couples living together, 5.1% were single mothers, and 52.5% were non-families. 47.5% consisted of single households and 13.6% had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.76 and the average family size was 2.46 people.
13.5% of the population were under 18 years old. 5.8% between 18 and 24 years, 23.1% between 25 and 44 years, 42.32% between 45 and 64, and 15.4% were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 47 years. For every 100 females there were 121.3 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 109.3 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 33,125, and the median income for a family is $ 41,250. Males had a median income of $ 38,125 versus $ 26,250 for females. The per capita income was $ 20,482. 11.8% of the population and 9.1% of families are below the poverty line. 10% of them are children and young people under 18 years of age and 33.3% are 65 years of age or older.
