Yakutat is an independent Borough (German about: District ) in the US state of Alaska , while administrative headquarters . Until September 22, 1992 the place was part of the then Skagway-Yakutat-Angoon Census Areas .

Yakutat is an isolated village in the lowlands of the Gulf of Alaska . It is located 340 km northwest of the city of Juneau on Yakutat Bay , in the north of the so-called Alaska Panhandle .

history

Originally the area around Yakutat was inhabited by Eyak . Before the first arrival of Europeans, they mingled with immigrant Tlingit . Yakutat was one of several settlements of these two Indian groups in the region, but is the only one that is still inhabited today. The name Yakutat comes from the Tlingit words yak ("ocean") and tat ("salt water estuary ").

European explorers came to the region in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Russian-American Company built a fort in 1805 to support the otter fur trade. When the company wanted to deny the Indians access to the nearby fishing grounds, a group of Tlingit attacked the fort and destroyed it.

Gold mining began in 1886, nearly twenty years after the United States bought Alaska . In 1889 the Swedish Free Mission Church opened a school and sawmill. In 1903, the Stimson Lumber Company began building another sawmill, canning factory, and railroad line. The factory, which operated until 1970, attracted workers to the city.

During the Second World War , the United States Army Air Forces stationed an air squadron near Yakutat and in the process built an asphalt runway that is still used today for Yakutat Airport .

The borough was formed on September 22, 1992.

One site in the borough is registered in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of April 21, 2020), the New Russia Site , which also has the status of a National Historic Landmark .
