Hoonah means village on the cliffs and is the largest Tlingit village in Alaska . It is located in the Hoonah-Angoon Census Area , 40 miles west of Juneau on Chichagof Island on Icy Strait . In 2000 it had 860 inhabitants who traditionally live from commercial fishing and the timber industry. In the summer, various cruise ships dock in the privately operated port of Icy Strait Point .
history
Hoonah was the main village of the Huna, a Tlingit tribe. In 1880 the North West Company opened their first shop here. In 1881 a Presbyterian Mission and School was built. In 1887 about 450 to 500 people wintered here. In 1901 a post office was set up. In 1912 the Hoonah Packing Co. set up a large canning factory north of town. In 1944 a fire destroyed much of the city and many priceless Tlingit cultural objects.

Due to the isolated island location, there are only two regular modes of transport: the ferry and the plane. The daily ferry service M / V LeConte the AMHS combines Hoonah to Juneau . From the air, which is Hoonah Airport of Wings of Alaska and LAB Flying Service served several times a day.
