Chichagof Island (in the German transcription of the original Russian name Остров Чичагова also Tschitschagow ) is an island in the Alexander Archipelago in the Alaska Panhandle , in southeastern Alaska . It is one of the ABC islands of Alaska .
The island has an area of 5,306 square kilometers, is 121 kilometers long and 89.1 kilometers wide (greatest east-west extension 95.8 km) and is the third largest island in Alaska after Kodiak and Prince of Wales Island . The population of the island in 2000 was 1342 people.
Chichagof Island is north of Baranof Island . It is bounded by Chatham Strait in the east, Icy Strait in the northeast, Cross Sound in the northwest, the Gulf of Alaska in the west and Peril Strait in the south.
The communities of Hoonah , Pelican , Tenakee Springs, and Elfin Cove are all in the northern half of Chichagof Island, in the Hoonah-Angoon Census Area . The southern half of the island forms the northern part of the City and Borough of Sitka . Only 8 people were counted in this area in 2000. The main economic sources of income for all of these communities are tourism, fishing and logging.
The island was named after Vasily Jakowlewitsch Tschitschagow , a Russian polar explorer and admiral.

Guided hunting trips are offered. It can brown bears , sea otters , seals , sea lions , eagles , sea birds and whales are observed. Also sea kayak -tours offered. Tenakee Springs has hot springs and public bathing facilities. Hoonah is the largest Tlingit settlement in Alaska and is also the starting point for fishing trips. Elfin Cove is a fishing village that was built on stilts. You can fish and hike in Pelican.
